Hey Linus Tech Tips,

I was thinking about upgrading my rigs graphical power and I was wondering: Should I purchase another 270X card and have both of them running crossfire, or just purchase a higher end GPU such as a 280X or a 290X?

What the other two said. Try to get the best single card you can get. Which a 290x is your best bet.

You havent even had that card 1 year. Do you usually replace your gpu's that frequently?

Not usually, the reason I'm deciding to upgrade already is because the limits of the 270X are becoming more visible as I saw with Metro: Last Light. Also if I want to run next year's games in good settings it seems that upgrading might be inevitable. My 270X wouldn't just sit and collect dust though. It would find good use in my dad's machine as he does some gaming on PC.

Well i dont think you're going to be happy with a 280x, just a old rebranded 7970. I'd hop on ebay and grab a r9 290, they are going for less than $300 right now.

The R9 290 sounds like a good idea at this point as I'm not much of an overclocker when it comes to graphics cards.  When I OC'd my 270X I only went around 100 MHz over the stock speed so nothing really special.  How long do you think that the R9 290 will be relevant in terms of performance on upcoming games?
