laptop dock (rant)

Mao_Zedong

I don't get why laptop docks exist. You can get a usb hub and a usb ethernet adapter, and you have the same thing for 1/4 the cost! if you know why they make sense, comment why.

The good ones also have a fan to cool the laptop and are also angled to give your laptop a more comfortable tilt.

i meant first party ones, some other brand ones are better (like the cooler master one). one example is the surface pro 3 dock, it is $200!!!

Setting my laptop down on a dock is quicker than plugging in the power cable, dispalyport cable, USB hub cable, ethernet cable, and audio cable, and lets me power it on without opening the lid, and leaves less of a cable mess when I'm not hooked up.  Also depending on the dock and laptop, they can let you use more monitors than would otherwise be possible without a dock.

but is it really worth it to spend $100 to save ten seconds every day?

Is it really worth paying money for comfort and ease?

That's entirely up to you.

I used to work at an insurance agency, and many of the sales people only had laptops with docking stations at their desk. They would go in and out of meetings all day with that laptop, so they'd constantly be disconnecting and reconnecting the system, maybe 10 times a day, increasing your number to minutes a day, every day, for their job. I know I'd rather have docking stations in that situation.

I used to use my laptop without a dock and use the 4 or 5 separate plugs because it doesn't sound like much effort in theory.  After getting a dock, I'd say it was well worth it (then again I only paid $40 for it on ebay hehe).  I'm in and out a lot, so the hassle does start to add up more than you'd think.
