Important VRAM usage in 1080p

Meijilol

Hey,

Everybody here is advising against a GTX 770 2Gb model because that's not enough and for roughly the same price, the R9 280x has more VRAM.

I read that games like Watch dogs need, in 1080p, more than 2Gb. I also read some tests where two versions of GTX 770 and 680, one with 2Gb and one with 4Gb had the same performance though they could see that the cards with 4Gb had their VRAM more filled.

My question is : does watch dogs need more than 2Gb all the time or it's better to have more than 2Gb to avoid VRAM replacement (I hope it's clear)?

Another question : should I go for a R9 290 though it has black screen issues ? I'm hesitating between this and the R9 280x which seems to have less problems (only artifacting and that's more rare).

For the R9 290, I can only afford the Sapphire Tri-X or the MSI.

No no no. No current games running at 1080p will use more than 2gb of vram.

Do you have that black screen issue? Also, do you know what kind of memory you have in your card (with gpu-z, for example)?

Not true. Titanfall requires 3GB for max textures. Even at just 1680x1050, and without max textures and only 4x AA, I cap out on the 2GB of VRAM on my 670. Not a lot of games need more than 2GB, but it's an outright lie to claim that none do. Hell, even BF3 uses more than 2GB of VRAM. Again, only playing at 1680x1050, I would use more than 2GB of VRAM with my old EVGA 570 HD 2.5GB. That's without the settings maxed out either.

I play Rage at 1080p on my R9 290. But I play it beyond maxed out using all kinds of little command hacks to try to make it look good. So it used upto 2.3GB at 1080p. I think Skyrim modded also may use more than 2GB even at 1080p.

Watchdogs does use a lot of VRAM but it is considered a badly made and inefficient game, so not indicative of other games at 1080p. Even if you have more VRAM watchdogs will not run  smoothly.

For 95% of the games at 1080p I think 2GB will suffice but there will be occasions where having more is helpful.
