Never built a PC before, need a new workhorse

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, was up way too late after I found the YouTube channel last night. So much stuff to learn!

I'm a game programmer and artist, and I've been on a 2011 iMac for the past few years. It's not powerful enough to run Unreal Engine 4, so I'm working on my first desktop build. Excited to get back into the Windows world and check out all the games I've missed, too.

The software I'll be using most is Photoshop, Illustrator, AE, Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, and VS2013. I've put this build together based on some recommended specs posted by the Unreal staff. Since I code iOS apps I'd also like to have the option to Hackintosh it in case the iMac dies, so I've tried to follow this recommended build from tonymacx86 as well.

Here's my part list, trying to stay under $2000: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Kx8Zzy

I'd love some feedback since I'm pretty clueless about all this! The mobo has some pretty bad reviews on Newegg, but I've seen it listed in a lot of successful builds as well. I'm also not entirely sure I've chosen the right PSU and graphics card - I know I want a GeForce and not a Quadro, not sure if the 780 would be a better choice for this type of work though. Really, any tips about anything would be a huge help!

Thanks so much for taking a look!

i think the LGA2011 is not really required

Z97 and a i7 might do the trick

Thats pretty decent, If you dont need 32GB of memory try go with 16GB and get a 4GB GTX 770, because if your going to be working on multiple displays and or using vram like crazy it can be a good thing, and you can always get another 16GB kit in the future :)

If your knew to it all try use VERY simillar parts to this build

like even just a brand change, even just not using Gskill memory or something can change the whole senario with hackintosh.  So get very simillar parts and then you can follow along with the guide :)

However, one thing to keep in mind is going for a better all round build and running Mac OSX inside of a virtual machine?  Because you can and then you dont need to spend insane ammounts of money on items so they will be able to be a hackintosh :)

Trying to stay under $2000. I edited the original post, thanks!

i think the LGA2011 is not really required

Z97 and a i7 might do the trick

I was going with that CPU due to the 6 cores and Unreal staff recommendation, open to using something different though. I was looking at the i7-4790k Devil's Canyon but read that Hackintosh support might be an issue. I'll take a closer look at the other Z97 i7's, thanks!

Thats pretty decent, If you dont need 32GB of memory try go with 16GB and get a 4GB GTX 770, because if your going to be working on multiple displays and or using vram like crazy it can be a good thing, and you can always get another 16GB kit in the future  :)

Never would have though about these options, thanks! I like the graphics card idea, makes a lot of sense. I'll be sure to watch that video too  :)

Get an h60 and liquid cool....

I looked at the h60 instead of the 212 for the longest time, was a bit afraid of liquid cooling but after watching some videos it doesn't seem much harder than installing a fan. Will the h60 be beneficial even if I don't go for a large overclock? I'll take a look at that 4GB card, too.

This is really interesting, lots of parts I never would have considered. Thanks so much! Still not sure about the 4790k in a Hackintosh, but with the liquid cooling and overclock it'd be a whole lot faster than the 4930k despite fewer cores. If I can run OSX in a VM instead like Mike_the_B0ss suggested, this build looks really appealing.

OSX86 has the best organised download archive I've ever seen for Hackintoshing.

I would strongly suggest using a distro like iAktos or the like for install. Litlle bit easier than trying to mix up your own USB installer. PM me if you need a hand with the hackintosh install, I'll be happy to help out.

you can add a second 780 when you get the money

More new parts to look at! I'll be sure to research them, thanks for putting this together. Does the EVGA 780 have any big benefits over the MSI 780? Most of the recommendations I've read elsewhere suggest an EVGA card too, I've always wondered why. Thanks again.

Intel macinosh software issues??? Are you sure you got that from a reliable source?

I read it on a discussion board, it was just speculation though. From what I understand, the Macs that Apple makes right now are either X79 or Z87 chipset CPUs, not Z97, so the chipset isn't officially supported by Apple (yet). After digging deeper it seems people are having success with the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H motherboard, though. Thanks for questioning that! Increasingly looks like the 4790k might be the better option.

@dimwit

It will be over the weekend. I currently have my old setup as a Hack build. Don't even do a hack build with AMD, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo painful to do. took me about 3 weeks on and off, to get it stable-ish

Current Hack Build : M4A89TD USB3/Pro, AMD phenom 1055T X6, 8 gig g.skill ram (4 x 2 gig), Asus GTX570, DVDRW and an old Toshiba 160 drive out of a laptop that died a painful death.

Because Apple now support Intel nativetly, Its so much easier to do and install. You can even install straight off the apple disc with a CD boot loader. SOOO much easier...

Ah the fun of it...........

A) the evga one will bee better

B) if you want hackintoch, change the cpu to a i5 4670k and a z87 mobo

C) the 780 will be better in your case, no doubt
