AMD upgrade (happiness)

Well i have upgraded my AM3 Dragon rig which was:

 

AMD Phenom II B55 Quad Core (unlocked x2 555 BE) @ 4.2ghz

MSI 790FX-GD70 (Quad Crossfire capable 790FX)

4GB Geil Black Dragon 1600mhz CL7

Coolit ECO ALC liquid cooling

2x XFX 7770 1GB Hydro Cell GHZ editions in CFX at 1200mhz stock volts

Corsair TX 650w (started to put out serious heat)

 

So it was upgraded to this:

 

AMD FX 8320 So far got an OC of 4.7ghz at 1.45v

ASUS M5A99X EVO 2.0

8GB Avexir Blitz 2000mhz CL10

Noctua NH-U12P

Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4 gigglebytes TRI-X

SuperFlower Golden Green 550W 80 Plus Gold

 

 

All i can say is.... worth the upgrade, the most noticable was the GPU, the CPU however has it's merits, slightly better at multitasking, and actually seems just as easy to cool (weird i know)

Mobo is solid so far, pretty low volts for the chip i think too.

 

 

So far i rate this system on usability and cost.

It's great that you replaced the CPU and motherboard as well. The old processor would have been bottlenecking that R9 290 massively.

mines 1.275 and i got a print screen of cpu-z at 5ghz with 1.5v, passing cinbenech r15 with a 790 score at 4.8ghz(maybe 4.9)

hows the r9-290 and what res are you at? im thinking of getting a used one off ebay at some point but its not like my 7850 struggles..

Not sure on VID, will have to Re-check, the 290 right now feeds a 1080p display (overkill i know)

 

The FX seems better at programs and tasks, and is definitely better at minimum FPS in games.

got mine from ebuyer, £104 (beats any intel bang for buck;)) and in bf3 ive not noticed anything that would indicate poor poor performance on a phenom but maybe i should re test it, ive done a few benchmarks but with a lower card (6670 and 7770) and wasnt cpu limtied, at higher settings it would be even more GPU limited id guess.

will re test one of these days  :rolleyes: and yeah id be using it for 1080p so "overkills just a word" sums it up.

No mate sorry, i am now learning to keep spares, after seeing a GTX 480 pop, i was stuck without a GPU for a while.
