I just got a Onkyo TX-84 receiver from a friend. I want to connect it to my PC and I already have a 3.5mm to RCA adapter, so I just need to know which ports to put them in. I assume either Phono or CD would work (or any of them?) but want to make sure. Thanks :)

Here's what the back looks like:

Thanks, is that due to the output of your soundcard or because of the receiver, or something else?

Phono, CD, or anyone that says Play.

Alright, thank you sir.

Alright, thank you sir.

Honestly, I forgot. But it does get annoying, and you will probably only need it for the signal coming from your computer or your phone/tablet (if you happen to plug one in to it).

Is it only an issue on old receivers?

For some people, it happens. Others (like you and my dad) there are no problems.

Yeah it definitely does have a lot of cracking going on.

Another question, would this receiver be too powerful for a pair of Micca MB42 speakers? The speakers are pumping pretty hard even when I have it on almost min volume.

Receiver Specs: http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/onkyo/tx-84.shtml

MB42 Specs:

  • Micca MB42 Specifications:
  • Woofer: 4″ Carbon Fiber Cone with Rubber Surround
  • Tweeter: 0.75″ Silk Dome
  • Enclosure: Ported
  • Frequency Response: 60Hz-20kHz
  • Impedance: 4-8 Ohms
  • Sensitivity: 85dB 1W/1M
  • Power Handling: 75 Watts (Each)
  • Dimensions: 9.5″ (H) x 5.8″ (W) x 6.5″ (D)

I don't think they'll be too much.

don't use phono, Turntables need an extra preamp to raise the cartridges output to line level, in many cases the preamp is in the amp.

First of all I tried using my front port speaker connector instead of the one on my sound card and that helped a lot with the crackling. Also I have the bass knob turned all the way down on the receiver but still get crackling/distortion (not really sure which) every time there's a low part in a song, I have to eq my music way down in the lower frequencies to avoid this. Do you think the ground loop isolator would help this?

It might. Turn down the treble a little bit as well, and see if that helps out.

Good call, I was using phono and it seemed to be giving too much power to the speakers. Switched it to CD and it sounds much better now. This seems to have fixed all/almost all of the crackling.
