Good Headphone Recommendations

Go to solution Solved by Lays,

I am leaning towards the v3's. Do you think they will sound fine on a computer without a sound card? I don't really have the money to get an amp or dac unless the cost isn't much. I'm also going to purchase a modmic 4.0 so I can talk in-game.

Yeah they'll sound fine for sure.  If they sound messed up, buying a cheap dac + amp will fix your issues.  ( anything from 25-50$ is perfectly fine )

@MayflowerElectronics are you here?  or @NannerBeans how do the v3's sound off onboard? ( if it's not plagued by artifacting + other issues that onboard suffers from sometimes)

I'd think it'd be alright then, if you have any issues get something like this:

Entirely depends on what motherboard he has. If it's something fairly new he should be fine. Amps are not 100% necessary, but a good upgrade later down the road.

Is there any way to convince you to not do that?

PLEASE do not do that, that is a horrible price to performance match-up.

I would recommend something like the HD650, with a cheaper amp+dac, then upgrade that later if you feel like it.

Other options: he-400, fidelio x1, Dt990, t50rp v3 or hd600 if you want a more balanced alternative than the HD650's.

All of those options would sound miles better than the LP's, and you would have big expandability in the future.

Yeah, definitely an imbalance in amp/DAC and headphones. You should really consider getting good headphones first and only adding an amp and maybe a DAC if they are required.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm going with fostex t50rp v3's

On my Asus Maximus VI Gene mobo it sounds fine but I do feel like it sounds a little bit better with my o2 amp. It's a pretty subtle difference though. One thing is that the default cable is actually a 1/4in and not 3.5mm. Get an adapter or buy the cable that Mayflower sells. I personally use a V-moda cable that comes with their headphones. You want a right angle connection for the headphone part since the hole is on the side instead of the bottom.

The stock cable is 1/4''. We sell an optional 3.5mm cable.

They're both gonna say it needs an amp, but I'm'a gonna disagree.
