Will this help my temps?

Go to solution Solved by keskparane,

Good temp fix.

That tape will eventually fail and leave a mess.

I'd suggest something you can wrap around the case like string or elastic to hold temp panel in place.

Magnets might be a solution.

Why not just use the case's sidepanel?

It shattered in my hands a while ago. Should have listened to those videos about not putting your pc on the floor.

I mean this should help the airflow right?

Thats unfortunate.

If you have enough fans it will help with airflow compared to no sidepanel 🙂

Bruh my PC fell on the floor glass panel first and it didn't break!

It got lose, some of the pins that hold the front panel broke thankfully not all of them, the pcie lever broke (just found it recently in the back of the case lol) and the PSU got a pretty big scuff, but all still works fine... 👀

What case is this and isn't a new side panel an option, maybe a metal one?

Sure, the cardboard will do but it's not really a permanent solution IMHO...

Sidenote: actually losing that pcie lever was a godsent, so much easier to switch out the GPU now! 🥹

PS: I have hardwood floor (oak) I think that helped a lot, it's not *that* hard, definitely dampens a bit (actually got it as a "PC appropriate floor" 😅 cause no static discharge and I hate carpet... Yikes)

For me biggest concern would be water/humidity, idk a cardboard case is kinda "cool" just not a permanent solution...

Btw the "trailer trash' solution reminded me that's how I have my speaker and controller cables attached (I just don't want the plugs wear out) and in that case some tape seems the best solution... I def need to replace it tho once in while...

Wait, sidepanels help with cooling? I run pure noctua fans (mostly 2000RPM 140s) and still find better temps without side panel.

Man, I get it. If you want that pristine look, go for it. But some of us enjoy the jugaar vibe. I still rock some wild DIY repairs because they Just Work and every time I notice them I smile.

As for long term, if you wanna rock this forever, no shade. But as others have pointed out, that tape will degrade remarkably quickly with the heat-cool cycles. You either want HVAC tape or even better get some thin plywood and bungee cord.

I suppose it depends on the case, in most cases leaving it on would be better as it keeps the designed airflow path, i.e cool air going over the components rather than escaping to the side

Fair, and I guess if the board has inadequate VRM cooling it could be necessary, but I've been running open case for a while and had better performance, better temps, and less noise with no noticeable reliability impact

I think your Noctua fans definitely play a part in that, I imagine the airflow is a lot stronger and more direct than some cheaper fans in a cheaper case

For my most recent build (rebuilt my main rig because mobo died) I actually ended up going with an OpenBenchV2 and it's loving the fresh air.

It's usually tempered glass.

I had a glass panel pop and shatter into many thousands of pieces by simply dropping it on the corner less than 1 inch off the concrete floor. That's all it took. 😞 The wrong amount of force in the wrong spot will lead to a complete disaster.

TBH, this is a feature of tempered glass, not a bug. Plate glass is just as likely to chip/crack, but when it does it turns a sheet into a myriad of razor blades. Tempered glass by contrast shatters into many tiny, largely dull pebbles.

EDIT: Okay, I'm wrong. Tempered glass isn't the same strength as plate glass. It's several times stronger. So we win coming and going!

My point is that glass is strong stuff...right up to the point it's not.

If you were to magnify concrete, you'll notice it's made up a teeny tiny rocks (like grains of sand or smaller). When the corner of glass hits just one of those grains, it's applying a shitload of force in a small area of glass. Once the fracture starts, it's a domino effect shattering the entire pane.

Yeah exactly it's stronger and safer.

Also strength is likely due to several factors, thickness, quality...

I mean I'm just surprised mine survived that, as the whole PC literally smashed onto it, not even a scuff... (unlike the PSU 👀)
