I have recently got a WD red pro 8tb hard drive for my home server about 2 weeks ago, mostly to store some files like clips, screenshots, and some backups of stuff like game saves and an additional backup layer for some documents.

I haven't dealt with a hard drive recently especially not modern hard drives so im not familiar with their operating sounds.
it is a brand new drive and still very much in warranty so before i actually fully use it i wanted to make sure its operating correctly.
i attached a sound recording of it in operation (sound seems to be either read, write or both), also there is fan noises but the scratching like sound is the hard drive

the sound is at about 5-6khz i think?

the sound was there sience i first used it.

could anyone help with this? thx

Welcome to the forums!
Is it sitting on a resonating surface? That *might* be normal if so.
Like, if you hold it in your hand is it making the same sounds? If so, yeah, it's DOA

I not too long ago got myself new HDD and was concerned about the noises, some people mentioned it simply sounds like specific brand+model of a HDD, one person linked this video: (maybe there's one that sounds like yours

listen to it while starting up or when idling, when it does almost nothing

you could compare the startup to one of the ones in the video, maybe 9:00 minutes and beyond I think I saw red pro versions

I've got a 16TB red pro and that sounds fine to me.

There should though also be idle time when the drive does neither read nor write and is more silent.

What does crystaldiskinfo say ?

Also you can download Kitfox and start the tests
