If you are going with single or dual graphics then go for Z97

If you are planning for 3-way or 4-way graphics, then I guess the extra PCI-e lanes of X79 can be considered.

Graphic and web design doesn't require that much, everyone I know uses an iMac or Macbook pro which are using haswell and ivy bridge chips.  so actually Z97 will do the job perfectly.

I would only get X79 if you're doing the following.

- 3D Modeling (intensive) / can still be done on z97 will take a bit longer though

- 4K video rendering all day long

- Cad

- Intensive 3D game development / z97 will be fine but render times might make you go insane.

I am the head supervisor for a Boyscout uniform and T-shirt company. I help the art/graphic department from time to time, designing projects. All we have at the company is iMacs, with Ivy-bridge inside.

I take a lot of the projects home because I can render the graphics faster and more efficient on both my X79 platforms then I can on any of the imacs at work.

Cad work= 3D imaging

Graphic designing = 2D imaging printed on T-shirts and uniforms

Web designing = neither ( Scripting )

I think you might of been confused at what I meant by graphic designing.

Don't know about other brands but Asus z87 boards all support Haswell Refresh in the latest BIOS. (Models with USB BIOS Flashback can be updated without a cpu or memory being installed).

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Oh i had no idea that they could do that with a bios update :)

But if you are going to buy a motherboard, might as well buy the latest one right? (as long as it isnt more expensive)

Im building a rig for gamingnxt week which is better?

Usually if you have to ask this question you DON'T need an X- based platform. So I'd say Z97.

Agreed. Interestingly it looks like many Z97 are going to be a little less expensive than the Z87 models they are replacing.
