Hello all, building a PC for the first time, but am struggling with the price of a SSD. 350 wouldn't break the budget, but it feels absolutely absurd to pay for 2 tb of storage. Should I just go with a hard drive, and a small SSD for operating systems until prices cool down?

What about 1TBx2?
edit: another great option is to get a 500GB 970 Evo Plus for your OS and a 1TB SN770, and yes, from Ali, and don't forget to use their sale coupons on big sums.

I agree, you may need two SSDs: one for the OS and the other for data/games. It honestly makes it easier to manage. I personally keep my Steam library on a seperate drive from the OS.

There's a premium for dense SSD storage, so the price per GB goes up the more data you can pack in a single drive.

Are they that expensive now? Glad I picked up the deal I found when I did. If it's just a drive for games and you have another drive for the OS, I suggest looking used.

If you are US-based and within a reasonable distance of a Microcenter, you could do a 2TB Crucial P510 for about $250 with tax

I hate to imagine gaming with them installed on a HD. It could be a long wait for pricing to drop. Don't know of a good solution for this.

I think that's down to personal preference. I like one big drive so I don't have to worry about balancing where empty space is. I have enough or I don't. Having said that, I still find myself running out and ending up with multiple drives anyway.

I know others like to separate OS and games, because they reinstall OS more often. I almost never reinstall within the life of a system.

I haven't been keeping up to date, but in short, yes. Low end 1TB drives where I am are about 2x what they were. Best case might only have gone up as little as 50%. Kinda glad I didn't dispose of my 1TB 2.5" SATA SSDs now. Recently sold 3TB HDs to a store, and it looks like they resold same day. Storage is still in demand it seems.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, MSI Ventus 3x OC RTX 5070 Ti, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Alienware AW3225QF (32" 240 Hz OLED)

Crazy. I picked up 4 low use 2TB WD drives on an Asus add in card for $275 a month and a bit ago.
