CPU Over utilized. Why?

Go to solution Solved by GuiltySpark_,

Read through the thread.

Nothing really conclusive just a shot of the CPU usage graph without a shot of the processes list. If the OP would have taken a shot of the processes list at the time of the first post, it would have solved it right then and there.

So far I see nothing out of the ordinary or certainly no reason to believe a virus is at play.

Runelight appears to be a game client so its pretty normal for it to use the CPU to some degree and thats not a very recent CPU.

Hey just curious as to why my cpu utilization is always running very high? even at little to no use its sitting over 50%, opening any browser or application sends it to 75% and above, at times it sits at 95%. Curious as to why its doing this? my other pc, amd, under heavy load is usually at 40-50% the picture is me with Chrome opened only.

Windows 11 is stupidly heavy on the CPU, but that still doesn't seem right to me. For some context my 10700 is sitting at around 5-10% usage while I'm sitting here typing this post with not much going on except for having about 10 browser tabs and Teams open. I don't think a 9700K should be that much worse off even without HT.

Definitely check out what your biggest CPU-hogging processes are as @Kilrah suggested, and possibly run a malware scan if manually checking the processes doesn't give you any obvious conclusions.

"TV Gaming" PC: Ryzen 5 5600 :: 32GB DDR4-3200 :: RTX 2070 Super :: 500GB PCIe 3.0 SSD :: 1.5TB of SATA SSDs :: Windows 11

Yeah, my 3900x sits at about 1% usage doing nothing in windows 11. This seems like a virus to me. I had a virus a while ago on my old pc where my cpu would sit at 50% and sometimes 100% when doing nothing. Used an antivirus and got rid of it and it worked fine after that

Ive just checked that now, few things running but as far as im aware nothing overly major to warrant such high usage? correct me if im wrong! image.thumb.webp.3007a717c901ebe0f5f380ec51664961.webp

Slightly off topic here, but does anybody know why Task Manager is showing CPU usage for all the programs in increments of 1.7?  0%, 1.7%, 3.4%, 5.1%, 6.8%? 12% is slightly off but increments of ~1.71 matches when rounded to the first decimal place. Is it always showing in increments of 1.7% or is that screenshot just a fluke?

Well if you add up all that stuff it looks reasonable, so yeah just many things running, probably most being the game and its rendering if it's in a window...

It's worth finding out, but it's also 1/5 of the problem. There's a bunch of proprietary peripheral software, and all of them are using too much for a background task (Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries, another Razer), then some webapp... It frankly looks like the task manager of a computer with its CPU stuck at low-power clocks, except your performance tab shows its working normally.

Windows % is very roughly a time based indicator of proportion usage, not work done. The 9700K does not have HT. If it did, it would be doing exactly the same work but showing half the usage %.

6 days of uptime. I'm guessing Fast Startup is enabled? and you only shutdown your PC since then, no reboot?

Try reboot, and if that fixed the high CPU usage, disable Fast Startup.

Strange indeed. My task manager of 11 25H2 prefers to show load in increments of 0.9%. Not always but most of the time. /ot

Probably task manager's accounting is quite crude, so depending on your number of cores, number of active tasks, the time interval between measurements, and perhaps the CPU frequency (hence the cycles per second) you end up with some "smallest counting block" of sorts (it's all 1.7% in the screenshot, but it probably moves around over time. I opened Task Manager and got everything in multiples of 1.5%, then 1.3%, then 1.4% as the number of active processes changed).

There probably is some amount of rounding going on. My 5900X almost always has increments of 0.6%, or very close to it, for its usage reporting.

I don't think it's a coincidence that my CPU has 3x the threads and the increment being used is roughly 3x smaller.

I'm sure some Task Manager programmer could tell us the exact reason, but if the reporting is low-level enough, it's likely that the usage is reported in discrete amounts in binary, and so the UI is doing a conversion to present it as a decimal percentage.
