Sorry this got really long and sort of off topic, but for my next build I really want it to be my best ever, and I have every single part meticulously picked out but when it comes to the topic (nvidia vs amd) I just can't seem to make a final decision.

I know its a stupid question, but It's one that I'm surprised I don't see here more often. I'm personally neutral on this topic, beachwear I have little experience with both brands because all of the high end cards I've ever owned have been AMD and i've had both mid range cards from both manufacturers. I've had a 5970, 6970, and 7970 all from AMD in past builds, but I had to sell all those cards to buy the next and I recently sold my whole rig that had the 7970. What I was left with was a spare computer I built for a family member that sits in my house that I through a 6770 into for some light gaming, and that weak little card could do a lot of work, 2 years later I trashed that card as it couldn't keep up with the times and got a 750 Ti for that same rig, and the main specs are in my signature, and that card is just amazing, I see a whole complete doubling in performance, for example BF3 (1080p) I could get only 60 fps with the 6770 on bare minimum lowest possible settings, now with the 750 ti I get 120 fps with those same settings and on ultra preset everything maxed I can get around 50-70fps all the time, but take into account I'm using the evga FTW 750 ti, which has way higher clocks and cooling compared to the reference, and on BF4 (1080p), which I never got to test with the 6770, I get the same results fom BF3 with the 750 ti. So what I'm saying is is that if Nvidia can make such an extreme beast card that only costs $150, their high end products must be amazing, right? But is that the case? For my next build I originally wanted to go maxed out nvidia and get a 780 ti, or wait a bit for the 880, which at this rate will come in about 3 years, but now I'm thinking of giving AMD another chance, but I can't bring myself to it. If I were to get a 290x all of the aftermarket coolers din't appeal to me at all, and the reference cooler is garbage compared to nvidia's coolers, but I do really like the design of the amd coolers, just not their actual cooling ability. So say AMD releases a new flagship in the next couple of months before the 880 from nvidia, should I go for that and get it for my next build, or stick with my original idea of trying out nvidia's high end. And one thing I always here about nvidia is that their drivers and game support is "way better", but with all my amd cards I never ran into a game that was unstable, wouldn't start at all, or had any artifacting or graphics issues, and I've played a lot of games on these cards, and one feature that always was so simple with amd drivers was the overclocking, its all right there in the CCC, for my 750 ti I have to use evga's precision X, which doesn't overclock in real time, so I have to close and reopen game to test clocks, and doesn't seem in sync at all with card and drivers.. Also I've just always considered myself an AMD guy.

All helpful and informative suggestions, opinions, statements, and comments will be greatly appreciated!

The way I think about it: AMD cards are $100 or so cheaper than their NVIDIA equivalents and put out a few less FPS than them. If it's only a difference of 5 FPS it isn't worth getting NVIDIA.

Holy wall of text, Batman!

I'm just going to say, as a non-biased Nvidia fanboy (bit of an oxymoron), both cards have their uses and advantages. OP, please specifically say what you'll be using your PC for, and whether or not you'd rather pay extra for the features Nvidia cards have. I can't read through all of that.

If you can afford it, go with a high end nvidia GTX800 series card.

Anyways, I would go for the 390X. AMD for their next gen GPUs they're going to make them ultra-low power consumption, meaning less heat and more overclockable. If they can also get a lot better performance, I think that the 390X would be better because it will 100% guaranteed be cheaper than the 880/880Ti

If specific features aren't an issue, get whichever is the better value at the time. There's no clear cut AMD vs Nvidia winner here--they're too similar and the value varies from different gpu comparisons, pricing, and availability at the time.
