Summary

TL;DR
  • YouTube appears to have removed the close button from side panel ads.
  • The removal of the button means that mobile ad side panels can no longer be dismissed.

 YouTube sidepanel ad

This update removes the “X” you would normally tap on to close out this side panel. As a result, there is now no way to dismiss the side panel when it shows up.

My thoughts

without any ad blockers this will be more of an issue, plus ads on platforms like thi have been a problem for a while now, youtube somehow made it worse then ever

I think most people block ads anyways. The bigger issue I see is YouTube is attracting less and less of what I see as "legitimate" advertisement. They are starting to accept very borderline scam type things as advertisers, rather than the large companies that once used to advertise there.

It's actually "only" a third of internet users who do https://backlinko.com/ad-blockers-users

I don't know how the remaining two thirds can stomach using the internet

When watching a horizontal YouTube ad on mobile, you may be shown a side panel ad that takes up half of the screen.

This only shows up when you're watching an ad - not while the video is playing. You're already getting an ad anyway so I don't see why seeing an ad next to an ad is an issue.
