It refers to the bus width architechure on a processor. x86 = 32bit ; x64 (x86-64) = 64bit.

Edit: It also involves ram as well. system ram is usually x64 these days. vram can be anywhere from 128-bit to in excess of 386-bit (approx).

what's x79 then, saw something like that before

I think you're referring to an Intel chipset. ie: the new x99 that will debut with Broadwell

Isn't the X99 chipset debuting with Wellsburg?

Which is Haswell - E

I may have it wrong. Haven't heard about Wellsburg, which may be why.  . . . I thought Haswell-E/Devils Canyon was z97?

That's fine.

X99 is Wellsburg : Haswell - E

Devils Canyon/Haswell refresh is z97

Though Broadwell - E will also be X99.

  • 2 weeks later...

x86 means 32 bit computing, x64 is 64 bit computing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64

Sorry, but this is not right.

x86 are all CPUs there are compatible with the 8086 and they can have a 16, 32 or 64bit bus with (maybe more in future).

x86-32 (sometimes called IA-32 or i386) are x86 CPUs with 32bit extension. Some People call it just x86, but this is not exactly.

amd64 (sometimes called x86-64, Intel 64 or x64) are x86 CPUs with 64bit extension. All amd64 CPUs are backward compatible with x86-32 CPUs.
