iPhone 17 launch

I don’t know if it’s just me or do you guys think that the iPhone 17 leaks below are probably not gonna be the iPhone 17 it just feels weird changing the iPhone design when they only did a big change last year and in my opinion they look bad.

does it matter if the designed changed? it's still just a crappy computer shaped like a rectangle. leme know when the iphone 20 is out so i can say the same thing about that.

I mean they all look like a big rectangle nowadays anyway. They have to do something so people can see that others have a new iphone. From the 11 - 16 they all look the same at a glance anyway. Sure when you pay attention you may spot the difference but when walking past or whatever that wont happen.

 

There's no huge excitement for new phones anymore which means the sales wont be as huge as wanted so they are just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks

Yeah I upgraded from an 11 to the 15 pro when they came out, its a night and day difference

 

Although I doubt I will get the 17 pro, guess I'll just have to see what apple announce. Not even sure what more I could want in a phone

You shouldnt "upgrade" every year, you should wait I'd say 3 to 4 gens to upgrade and actually get a worthwhile upgrade

Yeah everybody has pretty much given up and are just keeping their older generation phones because companies like Apple just aren’t doing anything new anymore except ai but anyone can just download ChatGPT on their phone.

I don’t think 85% of people in the world even use ai.

As an it consultant I'd say in what are considered first world countries at least 85% of office workers do use ai :p. This crap is mega wide spread at this point.

As a software developer, I mainly use AI as a timesaver, such as adding something to end of hundreds of lines of code

I’m just saying a lot of the features that phone manufacturers are making barely anybody uses them

Im just wondering if the stories about the portless iPhone are true. That would be kinda suck in my opinion. Outside of that I just bought a 16 pro last September. So I wont be upgrading till at least 5 or so more years down the road. I like to use my phones for a while before upgrades.

Even expanding to general audiences I'd say about 75% to 85% of 1st world country residents use it specifically because of AI assistants like Grok or ChatGPT, both of which are used for the most meaningless of tasks all the way up to "diagnosing" illnesses

Wireless charging capabilities on iPhones aren’t as good as they should be for this year when phones from different countries have better wireless charging than most iPhones wired charging so they probably won’t do that for a few more years but it might happen if there is an iPhone 17 air.

Not worried about changing, more worried about Car play, my car doesn’t support it wireless. I also heard wireless car play is unreliable.

This is pretty much how the iPhone 17 series will be, although I'd note that unofficial renders often look worse than the real thing. We've seen both dummy units (the sort used to test production and accessories) and rumors that line up.

 

Last year's update was actually relatively small, cosmetically — a slightly larger screen and the Camera Control button. This would be the first real aesthetic change in years.

I'd disagree. Many of those super-fast wireless charging systems are proprietary (you need their specific charger, cable, and adapter) and need serious cooling. For instance, I have a OnePlus 13 that has 50W magnetic wireless charging. It's wonderfully fast, but it only works with OnePlus' charger, and that charger has a fan that spins constantly — even when the phone is fully charged.

 

Qi2.2 and its MagSafe counterpart may seem slow at 25W, but they're not tied to specific accessories and don't need cooling. That's good enough for a quick top-up when you stop at home before you head out for the night, and most people don't really need more.

I would never buy the first iteration of a new design I would wait until

at least the second iteration because normally they fix all the problems in the last model (maybe like the iPhone 15 bending but that’s probably not a big problem)

I'd be more comfortable with this, although if you're cautious I would certainly give it a few weeks to see if design complaints pop up.

In my experience its mainly when there is more than 1 phone in the car, and both are enabled for carplay, the car has a fuss to decide who gets priority

I don't now about you, but I like having a "crappy computer" that keeps me in touch with the people I care about, takes great photos, lets me get some work done, plays media wherever I am, helps me shop, even helps me get from A to B...

 

A computing device's value isn't based on its benchmarks or raw specs. It's based on the value that device brings. And even a modest smartphone is incredibly empowering. This doesn't mean we have to celebrate iterative upgrades, but it's important to remember that these "crappy computers" literally change lives — a farmer in rural India may use a $100 phone to dramatically improve his business.
