Linus most certainly would not let this stand.  Curious on his thoughts about it.  The egpu product from razer would most certainly not give a laptop 5090 lvl performance.

Well, yes it would. It gives you a box that supports a real 5090.

Also, if you want people's opinion on a headline vs actual article, link the article!

Only misleading piece is the image from what I am looking at.

If it is a legitimate publishing/news release, feel free to link it! Just please don't click on any potential AI scam garbage that websites tend to promote in the side banners.

I only took a quick glance at the article, I don't think the writer nor Razer claiming a 5090 performance (as in full desktop 5090 perf)

As for the headline.

Idk, I think in a way, using eGPU is upgrading the laptop's GPU (if the GPU used in the enclosure/dock gives better perf ofc).

An eGPU dock will allow you to "upgrade your laptop with a 5090", what is said there is accurate.

It won't perform anything like a properly connected 5090, but that's not claimed anywhere.

Also what does Linus have to do with this?

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

It's a GPU upgrade from the laptop's GPU, not meant as a way to compete against laptops with top end GPUs.

It would be CPU and bandwidth-limited but still be a decent uplift.

Haha True that it can hold a 5090..but thats about it, my bad, link included now.  I'm not sure on it's legitimacy but if I understand the egpu architecture correctly even though it's over thunderbolt 5 the pci lane limitation still means it would be severely bottlenecked...to something like a 4070 super maybe...?

I only mention Linus just because he's an advocate for the people.  I suppose my issue with the article is that for the uninformed, sure you can put a big ol 5090 in the case but like others have mentioned, you won't get near the performance and a responsible post would suggest what a good graphics card would be that should go in that case to make full use of the thunderbolt 5 specification.  (It's a could you vs should you argument that I think should be included).

idk how it actually works.
But lets say the bandwith for TB5 is 80Gbps = 10GB/s
So 10GB/s is around PCIE 2 x16 or around PCIE4 x4 bandwith (8GB/s).

From testing done so far by techpowerup, derbauer, and GN (Derbauer and GN only tested down to PCIE3 x16)

While 5090m compared to 5090

There's probably still an uplift(?),

Or at the very least, can run the laptop without hearing jet engine noise from the cooling system, and possibly without having the laptop feels like it can be used to fry egg, with more or less same perf as the 5090m.

again, this is just me guessworking based on my very limited knowledge about this stuff.

I could be very wrong about this.

Have you been under a rock for the past 10 years...? "Linus would not let this stand", lol. There's thread every 6 months complaining about click-bait titles or thumbnails. And they are right to complain since that's YouTube and other social media platforms for you. Unless title, pic or first paragraph give bit overacting description of what's actually inside, site won't be visited and doesn't get their ad revenue.

So just normal click-bait title here. With image that made me think it wad April Fools and that was actual press pic from Razer, not high schooler with Photoshop.
