Hello!

 

What mdoel of router do you have?

Is the network cable directly between the router and the computer, or is there another device, like a switch between the router and the PC? If so, what model?

Have you tried a different cable?

Just to make sure you're not confusing units.

 

1 Gigabit =  125 MB/s maximum.

 

100 mbps = 12.5 MB/s

 

Make sure your TP Link router thing has gigabit ports. If it's a very old model, it could have a single 1 gbps RJ45 incoming connector, and 100 mbps outgoing RJ45 connectors.

 

How fast you download on your Xbox will probably depend from which datacenter you're downloading the game (how overloaded that location is), and if the game is being uncompressed as it's downloaded or not, the speed of the storage (is the xbox using a hard drive or a SSD, a hard drive could slow down transfers because it's not fast enough)

I have virgin media 1 gb plan, 1gb tp link which is used through a plug downstairs which plugs into the internet and another plug which has Ethernet into the pc, using a cat 8 cable

And so what your saying is 1gb actually means 125mbs???

1 gbps = 1 giga BITS per second = 1,000,000,000 BITS per second.

 

There's 8 bits inside 1 BYTE , so you divide that number by 8 and you get  125,000,000 BYTES per second

 

There's 1,000,000 BYTES in a MEGABYTE (MB) , so you divide this number by 1,000,000  and you get 125 MB (megabytes) per second

 

SO 1 gbps (gigabits per second ) = 125 MB/s  (megabytes per second)

 

This is the maximum theoretical bandwidth, how many bits can come through the cable and be decoded by the network card.

 

The data is transferred between computers in packets which contain a header with some information that's not actual file data (think of it like sending a book as loose pages in several letters, the extra data is stuff like page number, chapter title, it's not actual book content but useful information to reassemble a book at a destination from the loose pages).

So realistically, out of the maximum of 125 MB/s that could come through the ethernet cable, the actual useful content that could be written to disk as a file will be around 122-123 MB/s
