Which "unnecessary" file are you talking about, specifically?

Its the ico file after you have built your new custom folder with the new picture on it, it is still a spare file on your desktop that you don't need and once you rid of it or even put it in another folder your custom picture folder reverts back to the windows generic one.  I dare anyone to give it a go without losing composure.

I'd say that it's pretty normal for a icon to stop existing if you delete its source file.

As for the moving, windows likely just doesn't understand that the file path changed.

What?

You're saying "use that picture as folder icon", then delete that picture and expect something different than that icon not being used anymore?

That .ico file (which is short for "icon") contains the custom icon. So yeah, deleting it again gets rid of the custom icon. Not much of a surprise, really.

Ive just figured it out...what you have to do is put the ico file inside the folder first THEN customize the new folder  to the new ico file and it will work.  The Ico file must remain inside the folder..if you customize it before you but it in the folder then the ico file must then remain on the desktop for your new custom folder picture to exist...we don't want that so put it IN the folder first so it can just stay in there...personally once I have my new folder I don't want any extra icons lingering around but it's better at least inside the folder than on the desktop.

Tutorials don't show everything or at least they think they have done it properly.. because they are unaware of the icon file that is still on the desk top...they think once they have made the new folder that's completed until they throw the icon file away and find out their folder has lost the image..I have seen comments about people saying they have made custom folders and a few days later their image has gone again and they have the normal folder back...well I bet you half a mars bar those suckers have inadvertently thrown that icon in the trash that they thought was just cluttering the desktop and they are now wondering why their folder is back to basic looking.  SOLVED.

microsoft... you are all still a bunch of apes...

tutorial makers .... be more thorough

When the conversion has been made and you have your new folder...it should be working as a standalone without the spare icon file used to create it...but like I said in my last post I have got it working just make sure the spare icon file is inside the folder that has been created at least it does not have to stay on the desktop by itself.    Make sure you put the icon file in your folder FIRST before converting it.

When you set the icon it's just a reference to the file, it's not automagically making a copy somewhere.

You can as you say put it in the folder itself, or have a folder somewhere in your documents with all your icons that you won't move.

I know it isn't making a copy but that file should have been redundant I would have thought after the custom folder was created but as I've learned that icon folder must exist for the new folder, we just need to make sure the icon is inside the folder before you begin the modification.

There is no "conversion" being made. There is just a pointer to a file location saying "display this image as the icon". If you delete that image, then you should not be surprised that the folder doesn't show the image. It can't. It doesn't exist anymore.

Oh you still have to convert it first.. there are many free web based apps that let you do this, unless there are other ways.

Unless they drastically changed this in W11, you just right click on the folder, go to properties, customize, change icon and choose the path to the picture that you want.

Is that not the case in w11?

Thats how you would do it with the default selection of icons but if you want your own personal one you have to get an image file from somewhere and convert it first into an ico, but possibly there could be a way within windows 11 that would let you do this internally.

Ah I understand what you mean. But what I said still stands. It's not a bug. The folder and the icon displayed are separate things. The folder just has a flag that says "display this picture". So if you delete that icon "picture" file, it reverts to the default folder icon.

its not a bug as such I just don't like the idea of it, the tutorials about it that people make don't show everything and can leave you wondering what versions they are using, should not have to overthink stuff like this.
