Why did Nexflix fail?

So after last night PLE that saw Netflix streaming down for thousands, buffering, errors and general melt down that has some up in arms at Netflix, what do you guys suspect was the failure point? 
 

personally I think Netflix wasn’t prepared for the influx of users who wanted to see this PLE and fell face first into IT hell but you have to think this is a multimillion dollar company surely somebody at Netflix said “ hey are you sure we’re gonna be able to handle this? “ and they got a “ trust me, bro” answer..

happens all the time in telecom. pretty poor idea of capacity + cutting corners

Same reason Blizzard fucks up every video game launch.  Underestimates demand or just doesn't give a shit.  Not sure which.

probably underestimated the expected load, didnt add enough capacity, and the moment people start buffering on a live event they start refreshing in an attempt to fix it, adding even more load in the process...

 

for a platform the scale of netflix, deploying extra capacity should be fairly trivial, unless they hit some bottleneck not accounted for (like maxing out a load balancer that's normally way over spec)
