PSU reccomendation

i have a 650 watt power supply at the moment with a 3060 and a ryzen 5 7600 looking to upgrade to a 4070 and ryzen 9 7950x do i need to get a new 750 watt power supply with surffice the calculators seem to say wil require max 550 watts even with my drives and oither components added to the calculation

650 is cutting close and you might experience some serious throttling if parts don't get enough power. Honestly though just get the upgrades and if it doesn't work at that point get a new 750W corsair PSU.

Your psu is fine.

You will not max out both the cpu and gpu at the same time and even then...

My only concern at that wattage is that 650 watt looks really low end. Not sure if I'd have much faith in it.

The wattage isn't low end. The quality of the CV650 is low end.

What is driving an upgrade from a 7600 to a 7950X?  What changed?

 

I wouldn't change the PSU at all, it's plenty of power.  Try it before you buy something new.

If you're going to upgrade, in my honest opinion, save up the extra money & get the better PSU too - the reason I say that is because the PSU you have now is on the lower end of what Corsair makes, in terms of quality, not just wattage, that line is not as sturdy as the others.  
But, the others do have a point, do the upgrade, see if you have issues, if you do, upgrade PSU.
Most likely you won't have many issues until the PSU starts degrading due to age...

 

I would second the question of what's the driver behind wanting to change from a 7600 to a 7950X? Are you doing professional workloads, is this for gaming, or what's the motivation?

I myself am very likely aiming for a 9950X3D when it comes out, but I'm leaning that direction because I'm doing Stable Diffusion and other similar workloads that will benefit from the extra cores & I do also use the system for gaming, which is why I want the X3D over the regular 9950X.
