Outdoor ethernet cable

Psittac

A buddy of mine doesn't want cables running through his living space, We're trying to get him off wifi and he came up with the idea of outdoor ethernet.  What cable would I use for typical broadband? No servers no file transfers etc.  I figure I'm going to get 100ft but don't want to grab a random cable from amazon.  Thought I'd check here first.

What is he using it for and why off wifi?

Are you trying to run ethernet cable outside or run it between 2 buildings or run it along the outside of the building. If any of these use out door rated cable and make sure to attach the cable properly so it doesn't just hang around loose.

If you are just trying to connect a laptop or device to the internet while outside and his wifi sucks outside then you may be better off just getting better wifi maybe a 2nd wifi access point to cover the outside area.

If he just doesn't want a cable running threw his living space you can hide a network cable well enough if you try or use a power line adapter will use the cables inside the walls to send ethernet however these often have speed issues and have had other issues with them.

Cat5e and higher, all will be good for 1gbps and more.

Get cables rated for outdoor, they'll have UV resistant sleeve, and you may also want cable with low smoke, flame retardant chemicals in it etc etc.

Doesn't have to be shielded, but it wouldn't hurt.

Here's a bunch of cables, put the filter to see UV Resistant + optionally other features : https://www.digikey.com/short/rvdz0m5w

Most are sold by the spool, as in 300 ft or more, but you'll find some there that are sold by foot or by meter.

Outdoor rated cables tend to say "CMX" and you would also want it to be UV rated. More info on cable types & purpose here: https://www.truecable.com/blogs/cable-academy/selecting-the-correct-outdoor-ethernet-cable
