Best Free Vpns

Go to solution Solved by Eigenvektor,

Every service needs to make money somehow. So if a VPN is free, they are going to sell your data. In that sense, you are much better off with your ISP. Even if you pay money for a VPN's service, you're basically just trading one ISP for another.

Right now your ISP can see the host names of the sites you visit. Provided the site uses HTTPS, they can't see anything else, otherwise they can also see what data you send or receive.

With a VPN, your ISP can't see that stuff, but now the VPN has simply taken their role. The VPN can now see the sites you visit and the content (unless HTTPS). Is that really better? What makes the VPN provider more trustworthy than your ISP?

Pretty much the only reason to use a VPN is to potentially get around geo-restrictions, provided the site in question doesn't block VPNs in turn.

Ever since my brother couldn't afford to keep Nord Vpn I've started to use ProtonVPN (free)

Because of Im very paranoid about security and it let's play supercell games on my gyms WiFi.

I want to know if I've made a good choice or if there are better free alternatives or risks associated with Proton?

My main wants are

Security (like encrypting IP and internet traffic and not hoarding my data but that's more withstandable)

Unlimited use

Not using a but ton off mobile data as I don't know how it works to encrypt my traffic

VPNS wont really protect your data at all. Best thing you can do for security is not to connect to public wifi.

Free VPNS often are littered with issues and again, offer pretty much no additional security.

VPNS only real usecase is if you want to watch shows or something on netflix from  a different geolocation for region locked stuff. Otherwise VPNS dont really protect you in the way you think they do.

I understand nothing is bullet proof but I dont believe vpns are completely useless as you mentioned like accessing geo resttricted content.

I believe though it does add a layer of security on top of safe practices.

Fair point if its purely free but if they offer a premium and are highly well reviewed like Proton appears to be them I'm more likely to lean towards them.

Loads use Nord but if they offered a free version that's way downgraded people will probably still use it.

Data collection I understand and agree with you there. I'll probably only use proton when needed as it does have some benefits for me. Thank you all for your opinions and information I'll take it into consideration.
