Well, there is some confusing branding from MS. Though, it seems like Xbox went rogue within MS, and have only recently been reigned in/fatally wounded.

I wonder if it's an accessibility feature? Say you only have the use of one hand; combine the inputs from the controller with foot operated controls.

I can't even imagine how this would function or what the use case is for this functionality. I guess it prevents needing to pass the controller in certain games?

I have 2 ideas,

first would be game where 2 players go same direction, less used most likely.

second one would be someone's playing and another joins with copilot, the first guy then could realistically stop playing and for example go to bathroom, kitchen, do whatever, take a break - people could take turns on playing single game basically.

At least I assume it can work like this.

What Copilot, the application, in these situations is supposed to do is act as an interface between various devices so that more than one can access the computer without the user being required to set things up manually, it's other functions are to act as a slightly less annoying replacements of the late Cortana.

This is the first device that connects to Copilot and not having to go into Copilot to connect to it. But, I suspect more will be coming on shortly.

Never having used it, but removed it from a number of computers, I can not attest as to how well it functions.

This seems to be the case.

The main intended use of Co-pilot mode is to help a struggling player get through difficult parts of a game. For example, if you have young children who are having a hard time with a game, you can be the co-pilot and help them get past hard sections.

Co-pilot mode also has an accessibility purpose. Some players may have mobility, coordination, or other issues that make some parts of a game difficult for them. Co-pilot mode lets you assist them in those sections without taking the controller away from them

(...)

Co-pilot mode also works for the Xbox Adaptive controller.

Given this article came out in 2022, it seems this "copilot" branding preceded the other iterations of the name within microsoft.

Copilot means 2 controllers act as 1. It is really cool. Local friends recommended.

Yep, I used it a bit when gaming with my daughter when she was younger. Came in handy a few times, but certainly an extremely niche scenario.

Edit: It was slightly more convenient than passing the controller for a tricky jump etc, and made it less likely she'd give up if she kept having to pass the controller. Psychologically made her feel like it was more cooperative.

Oh you just gave me a great idea. My son LOVES this Hot Wheels game on Xbox Gamepass (it's awful don't play it) but struggles to reach both the buttons and analog trigger. I could control the triggers while he controls the steering.

Yep, that would be a great use of it.

We also used it effectively for a game called Brothers. It's a game where one player is supposed to control 2 characters at once. Each character is controller with a different analog stick (great puzzle/adventure game btw). We used that to play it co-op, each using 1 stick on our controller.
