Do I need an amp?

Go to solution Solved by ShearMe,

Ok, cool. I do need an amp then, as i dont have one :/     Im open to hear any amp, id like for it to be around $100.

The Schiit Magni will stack nicely with your Modi. Kinda surprised you got one without the other.

Hello,

I bought a new pair of cans about a month ago, the audio technica a900x's, and theyre pretty awesome. Im really into the bass, but, i can only get the bass on my phone. My Galaxy s4 is driving good amounts of bass into these, but, my computer is not. Im using the onboard audio on my gigabyte 900fxa ud3 (rev 4), but i also have the schiit modi dac. Ive been looking around on the internet and i think i might be needing an amplifier for more sound and clarity. Is this what i truly need? And if so, what are some of your recommendations? keep in mind, i really enjoy hearing clear bass.

Thank you,

Sam

I was almost certain that i did need one, but my friend who knows more about this topic told me that i shouldnt need one because of the low impedance of my cans

Well he's probably right in that they don't need something special, but a DAC like the Modi only outputs a line level signal.

What he probably mean't was that you do not need anything other than your onboard sound for your headphones.

Yeah the onboard should work satisfactorily but with an external DAC like that you need an amp.

I've read some reviews that the Magni-Modi combo sounds great, even when compared to O2-ODAC combo. Is it true? It's kinda hard to find an O2-ODAC here. 1 place that sells them, price it at $300+ mark....

Well putting aside how the company is not trustworthy at all and doesn't deserve my money for trying to covering up their amp that kills headphones, the gain settings are not as good and are too high for most headphones that are not hard to drive. There are also a few other problems with it but I remember anything off the top of my head. If the o2 is hard to get for you, I suggest just waiting for the E10K

You're asking the wrong dude - I think all amps sound the same (not including distortion added from tubes).

The Modi/Magni surely is better looking, and the form factor is better for desktop use. O2/ODAC simply has more flexibility in what you can do with it since it is DIY after all.

Ah OK, I guess in the meantime I'll enjoy my E10 then....

Yesterday I auditioned the C5D and the O2+ODAC. C5D not my cup of tea, so scratch that. The O2 combo was quite nice. Even tested in the store, I can still hear it sounded wider than the E10 (I brought my E10 for comparison). Could be the DAC, or the amp, right? So I tested again, E10's line out to the O2 combo's line in, and I didn't get the wideness (can't test it the other way around, cause E10 doesn't have analog line in). So I figured, it's the ODAC that's wider than the E10, although of course it's just a very minor difference. Liking the O2 combo so far, but like I said, hard to get one that's under $300 here. Even if I order from the US, the shipping fee will render it $300+
