7800X3D significant worse single-core performance on Windows 11

I am getting significant worse single-core performance on Windows 11 compared to Windows 10. Both on a clean install with the latest chipset driver.

 

My score on Windows 10: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/17455876

My score on Windows 11: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/17455547

 

That's almost a 20% difference. 

 

What could be causing that? I had to go back to Windows 10 for better performance but I'd much rather use Windows 11.

Have you checked to see if your CPU is downclocking due to an AVX offset in the bios?

 

Win 11 uses AVX for some background tasks so if you have an offset enabled in the BIOS, your CPU will likely be downclocking pretty much all of the time.

I didn’t change anything in the BIOS other than enabling PBO and setting up EXPO. Rest is all on default settings.

Are you really going to base your entire conclusion off of one test?

 

Geekbench is unreliable at best. Add software like blender to your list of benchmarks for a better overall look at performance.

Try cinebench, and watch CPU Clocks and the like while testing.  (Note:  You lost 200mhz on one of your tests, so your CPU may have been doing other things, too.)

 

Also make sure you turn off background stuff beforehand, that can make a significant impact.

Have a look in the Overclocking area of the BIOS and look for a setting labelled 'AVX Offset'.

 

In Win 10 and previous, you'd probably never have noticed the offset unless you were working with programs / games that leveraged AVX workloads.

 

It was one of the 1st things I spotted when upgrading to Win11. Why the heck was my CPU boosting to less than what I specified....

Windows 11 security features like memory integrity can impact performance, as can other security patches, but not by 20% on a recent CPU.

Yeah I noticed that 200mhz loss too, but almost a 20% difference is quite significant for just a 200mhz loss
