7950X3D CPU (Tctl/Tdie)/CPU Die (average) Temp spikes Idle computer

Hello

For context
I had always used HWINFO to monitor CPU since the voltage issues with X3D CPUs and it starts automatically with windows + I used to have a warning sound for high temps 80+.

Couple weeks I have observed a weird behavior on my system.

After startup when I start to work with only Browser + teams and Outlook open I noticed that  (Tctl/Tdie)/CPU Die (average) would spike to 76+ Celcius without anything significant running.

Here is My config

Here is a screenshot from today.

CPU (Tctl/Tdie)/CPU Die Peaks  are way too high for a system running on a room temp of 22 Celsius(air Conditioning on).
The GPU is water cooled
CPU is on a Deep Cool LT720 3600 mm Radiator.
Thermal paste is Kryonaut.

Given the history of X3D CPUs this high temp spikes are uncomfortable.
Here is Ryzen Master so you can see the settings

I wonder what can be happening or if this is indeed a issue or not !

For a Ryzen 7000 CPU this looks normal to me. They bounce all over the place when it comes to temperature.

They have a setpoint at 89c for the 7800X3D's and 95c for the non X3D CPU's.

The CPU's are made to hit that max temperature before clocking down or limiting power, the CPU doesn't care if its at 79c or 95c.

My 7700x does this as well and its just normal behaviour of the Ryzen 7000.

You can try some PBO tuning and curve optimization.

What @Hinjima said and also, your computer is initialising a lot of things upon boot, and so is quite CPU intensive for the first little while, so expect an initial spike in temperature when computer boots, also, the chip burn in from overvoltage has been fixed for quite a while now so it shouldnt be anything to worry about, the chip didnt even break 70C

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT NITRO+ [1050mV, 2.8GHz core, 2.6Ghz mem]

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

I'd consider a browser alone quite significant, given Javascript applets loading will spike CPU usage.

Also right after startup, Windows can be doing a lot of stuff in the background.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Thank you!
I have setup the PBO properly this time !
I will wait a couple days to see the result.

Here are two videos explaining the Ryzen 7000 further in terms of temperature and boosting.

I timed GamersNexus's ( Bottom video ) at the time where he talks about this.

Check the summary at 23:56 at the end for a recap as well.
JayztwoCents video is long but quite intertainig where he also goes through how the Ryzen 7000 series works in real time.

Just linking these in case you want to watch and learn a bit more 🙂
