290x For a 780

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Sounds good. Go for it if you like.

My life has finally come full circle since the launch of the 290x when I bought one for $650 and canceled my order. I wanted to sell my GPU for a (pretty high) price with a waterblock just to see if someone would buy it. I wanted a Classified edition so I could get better overclocks, but someone has offered me a new (ish) MSI 290x reference card that I could put a waterblock on for my 780. I think I'm going to take it, even if the 290x was a mining card. It performs the same as my 780 when I OC it as far as it will go and at 1440P the 290x will be better for the 4GB of VRAM etc. And I could OC the 290x a ton and get it to surpass the 780 by far, but I still have some reservations.

What do you think?

Thanks.

In all honesty, both perform simillarly.  But if it was me I wouldn't take it because the 780 is 'slightly' faster and I generally prefer Nvidia.  But also because you dont know how much hes stressed his card?

The 780 is a little slower from what I have seen, but when I OC it it becomes slightly faster, so kind of. I'll have to look at 290x benchmarks when they're completely OCed. I'll ask him what he did with the card, good idea.

Id keep the 290X, only because it is a faster card, despite the crap ton of heat that comes with the 290X, but a waterblock can fix that :)

The 290x is generally faster being somewhere between the 780 Ti and 780. It beats the 780 Ti in some cases. The same can't be said about the 780.

Please excuse my laziness with not posting benchmarks.

Yeah, I think he ended it because of this.

well man, if you have a waterblock, and you paid money on it and want the awesome aesthetics of water cooling.  Go for it.  In the end its your choice.

Just for reference:

I have the 780+waterblock

He has the 290x

He will give me the 290x for my 780 with a waterblock installed.

Maybe the title should have been "780 for a 290x" but I don't think it would make a difference.

That's most probably why the AMD R9 290X2 comes with a water block attached. :D
