500 dollar gaming pc

Go to solution Solved by 8tg,

The 600w smart is fine, they’re perfectly adequate power supplies on a budget.

Dont bother with a new GPU on this budget, get a used GTX 1080, they can be had around $100 and will perform nearly the same as a RX 6600 in most scenarios, slightly under in others.

IMG_2273.thumb.jpeg.b59e4785fa3673c80b9078758c4b2da3.jpeg

spend the price difference on a better cpu or motherboard

A 12400F is around $130 used, leaving around $50 for a better B660 motherboard instead of H610, and a decent cpu cooler.

Then in the future the only upgrade to do would maybe be a better GPU, since you could pair a 12400F with a lot higher tier of GPU than a 1080 or RX 6600

I already have a case that will fit the parts

sup dawg

The most acceptable bottom barrel PSU would be this:

Power Supply: MSI MAG A550BN 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($49.99 @ Amazon)

if you wanna stay in budget then the 5500 is an option but I think the 5600x for that price is worth it. You could also bid for it and get it somewhere around the $90 maybe more range

I'd argue that the i3 12100f is quite a bit better gaming CPU than Ryzen 5 5500 (which due to the lack of cache is more comparable to the Ryzen 5 3600 rather than it's other Zen3 peers). So at minimum I would go for Ryzen 5 5600 if he decides to go AM4 route.

But the i3 build is also cheaper so...

no problem. It does win in some games, but so does the 5500. AM4 is more dead than lga 1700 (kind of) but they did say they're going to release EVEN MORE CPUs to the am4 socket in the future AMD preparing Ryzen 5000XT series, yet another update for AM4 socket - VideoCardz.com

I would say go intel if a 12400f was there, but not a 12100f, it doesn't keep up nowadays

bro lot of 600W PSUs and below are made out of dirt, you're praying for things not exploding

I could recommend something, but would just be this a re-hash of this one.... maybe with the R5 5600 (non X)... but NOT the R5 5500!

That said, I love the GTX1080 (non-Ti) for even less money 🙂
