A 2 core costing 2000$. I'd rather buy a laptop for $1000 with a decent GPU and a 4 core CPU.

Yeah just carry it around in one hand like an ipad ><

You just cannot compare the 2. Sorry

Already known for a while.

And you have an error, the 4650U is a 1.7GHz CPU: http://ark.intel.com/products/75114/Intel-Core-i7-4650U-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz

The Core i3 has a Intel HD 4200 graphics.

Core i5 has a HD 4400

and Core i7 has HD 5000

The CPU of the Core i5 is identical to the Surface Pro 2 revision 2

Do any of the variations satisfy your wants in a high quality Windows 8.1 machine?

Also, talk about whether you like the idea of going with a Tablet for your portable daily driver. If you wouldn't want the Surface Pro 3 or any Surface what about one of the alternatvies? http://www.zdnet.com/7-good-windows-hybrids-that-rival-the-surface-pro-3-7000029699/#photo

an i7 dual core with hyperthreading that runs at 3.3 while turbo'ing? thats pretty amazing imo

my school has a bunch of RT tables first gen, and if find them pretty good for a laptop replacement, only thing is that you cant really use it on your lap...

I'm very much considering a Surface 3.

I do want a laptop, don't have one currently.

But the idea that it could also be used to write up notes and stuff in lectures, like with the pen not typed, seems really interesting to me.

I was looking at the i3 or the lowest i5. I figure an i3/4GB of RAM would be fine for note taking, youtube, web browsing.

Only worry I have is that free 30~GB of HDD space, and if that would be enough, or I could use the microSD to expand that further and it still be fast enough.

It's not HDD its flash storage. Kinda like SSD. Also, you can use a Micro SD card I believe up to 128gb. Also, just save documents, photos or what ever you want saved in OneDrive so that you can access them anywhere.

Don't really get the point of getting anything above an i3 if u just get a clock speed boost and not more cores or threads kinda disappointed thought the i7 would be Atleast a quadcore for the price :/

There is DEF a performance boast going from the i3 to i5 to i7. Plus the i7 has hyperthreading and you get better graphics as you go up. Also, most laptops actually are dual cores anyway but some are quad cores.

Ah Doh, I did know it was Flash based storage, must have been on auto pilot.

And yeah, thats what I was considering, using the 30~ for programs only and then using a mix of a MicroSD, OneDrive, DropBox and my NAS for any further storage needs.

Will make a decision based on price most likely, its going to be nearer the end of the year before I'll be in a position to buy one, so I guess atleast I will be able to see far more reviews and whatnot.

No they all have the same amount of threads also for an i7 I would expect it to have a quad core since a lot of laptops have them and graphics boost not really anything to care about its intergrated and a tablet your not going to be playing AAA titles on this.

These are the ULV chips, you get the same if you buy an ultrabook and, honestly, if all you do is browsing and some office work they're excellent.

I was hoping I could hook the I7 variant up to an external gpu (which has been ruined by no thunderbolt) and replace my desktop. Oh well. I'm not sure the I7 had the horsepower I would want anyways.

A FX 6300 has more cores and more threads then an i5 4670k YET the i5 def beats it. I think you need to understand that performance isn't just about cores/threads/speed in the processor world.

Wtf are u on about I never said that I know that wtf I'm talking about the specific INTEL chips inside the surface are all nearly the same just with a clock boost and better igpu and that makes no sense at all u are comparing 2 completely different architectures then saying the same goes for chips with the same architecture so by your logic there is nothing better than an i3 lol

That i7 model must purr.  I imagine it will even run some games modestly well (i.e. not at 1440p resolution unless they're super simple).  How many games have good touchscreen support, though?
