PNY 480gb SSD - seems to work and can see files but VERY slow

Hoping someone here with more experience can help me out.

 

I've experienced similar issues with mechanical hard disks in the past, but not with solid state drives.  With HDDs, trying to access the disk would result in a spinning mouse cursor and sometimes with clicking of the drive.  Cannot hear that with SSDs.

 

When I plug in my PNY 480gb SSD via USB, the drive's detected and I can see my files etc.  But when I try to copy files or see it's properties, it would almost always crawl to a standstill.  The file transfer rate jumps up and down, with max being a few MBs, but consistently around 350KB/s!

 

I have also plugged it directly into a SATA port on a motherboard with the main OS on NVMe, but the system takes a while to load up the OS.

 

Is there anything I can do to try get those files off the drive with having to leave the drive in copy mode for 3-4 weeks!

 

I suspect it may be something to do with a dodgy controller?

What kind of file transfer is this? If it's lots of small files, then seeing only a few KB/s is totally normal. For very small files, the filesystem overhead becomes the dominant bottleneck for transfer speed, and speeds even down into the single digit KB/s are not unheard of for tiny <8KB files - no matter how good the SSD is.

 

Have you tried running a test like Crystal Disk Mark to see what results it gets there?

It's a 50gb image file so should be fine.

 

I've not run CDM as pretty certain it'll just hang.

 

It's as if the drive becomes unresponsive, which is the term I should have made clear in my opening post.

 

Ideally, I'd like to try get the files off the drive before formatting it and hope it'll sort itself out.

Give us a model of the SSD. 

And a screen from crystaldiskinfo of it 

 

And what if you rewrite the image to SSD again, are then try to copy it?
Are the speeds ok then? ( if the6 are ok, then this could indicate a data retention problem ).

are the write speeds good? 

And tell us, how do you store that SSD? Is it unplugged?

Yes do that, but do a secure erase if you can, not just format.

The model is CS900 and shows 100% Good health in CDI.  No pending uncorrectable errors, CRCs etc.

 

There's less than 10gb left on the drive, but I've not written anything to it, as want to leave it untouched (in case it messes something up!).

 

I just leave it on other SSDs when not in use and not attached to PC.

There are some models on QLC in CS900, but also the smaller ones were on TLC. 

if it’s QLC and is left outside of PC, for months without powering it on, then simple data retention, can be blamed. 
 

the test is simple, just rewrite the old file, and see if read speeds improved.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.  Didn't realise data retention's an issue on SSDs, but makes sense.

 

Think I first used the drive in April / May 2023, then written more at the end of Aug 2023.

 

Think I encounter my current issue when I tried to access the drive probably end of Jan 2024.

 

Problem is, I can't rewrite the old file, as an image of another disk was written to the SSD.

If it’s similar to the first one, it will do.

as the first one was also an image right? 
Try to copy it somewhere? Best in the same place, as the first one ( if it’s possible )
