How much of a benefit is an extra 4 gigabytes of VRAM? (RTX 4070 Ti vs 4070 Ti Super)

I'm planning to buy a 4070 ti/ti super to upgrade from my current graphics card, an RTX 2070 Super. I'm looking to play a few VR games, and some newer, more intensive games.

The games I plan to play are
DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) in VR

Cyberpunk 2077

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition

Death Stranding

 

And whatever other games come out in the next 5 years.

 

My main concern was with DCS and the difference in VR performance. Would the four gig difference in VRAM make an appreciable difference when playing DCS in VR? I've heard it's very hungry for VRAM.

As JayzTwoCents likes to say, when you are in the midst of purchasing a product: always buy the product you can afford, at the maximum limit of your budget first,

 

Therefore, IMO, I believe this is how that would translate; if you can afford the Ti Super over the Ti, simply go with the Ti Super.

That makes sense, I didn't really think about it that way. And I guess buying the Ti Super would keep me out of this situation for longer.

Atm 12GB VRAM are enough for 1440p, but this will certainly increase

And it's already tight at 4k, so go for the Super if the price difference is bearable

higher VRAM means the card  is likely to run more demanding games that can come out in the future,

 

because with resolution and certain graphics settings increase, the VRAM gets more full,

 

when VRAM gets full, some of the assets that are needed will be loaded from somewhere else,

 

and that is way slower, because VRAM is right next to the cores physically, while everything else, RAM, SSD, is comparatively miles away

it's a safe headache remover if you're the type of person that plays brand new games, even if 50 new games get released and you only buy one

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. When you run out of VRAM it'll overflow to system RAM which is ~10x slower usually, so games will choke. Whereas if you have too much VRAM.... nothing happens, the game just won't use it all. So like @BiG StroOnZ said, if you can get the better card then do so.

oh yeah, a simplest comparison also, is it's as same as running out of RAM,

 

except the difference is,

 

running out of RAM creates long loading and potential crashing/freezing caused by unexpectedly longer load times,

 

running out of VRAM slows down the supply of certain assets, which loses you FPS, sometimes a lot of FPS, and can hurt in 1% lows

You're clearly a demanding user and you can afford the bigger card, so I'd just get it. No brainer.

 

12GB was always too low for the price of the original Ti and arguably it is still too little now with 16GB.

 

You can always turn stuff down (or turn up DLSS) to get better performance as the card ages, but there's no way to add VRAM.

I like to think I'm not that demanding lol. I'd like to bite the bullet once, and let that last me a good long while. I don't play too many intensive games so I want something that'll last me like 4 or 5 years at minimum. My 2070s will have lasted me 4 years this summer.
