What should I do with my 2nd drive?

So I just recently bought an 1tb M.2 NVME drive, and already have a 1tb HDD in my PC. I was wondering what the best use for these would be. I was thinking of setting up RAID 1 but I read in some places online that RAID can be buggy with NVME drives. Should I do it or is it better to just have 2tb of storage. I don't really have anything important worth backing up, but I don't really need 2tb of storage either.

Me, I'll just use it as a backup drive.

You don't need a HDD in a machine in 2024.

Donate it to a friend, use it in a server, or mount it on the wall for the shiny platters inside.

In short:  DO NOT USE IT IN YOUR MAIN RIG.

Not everyone has a NAS or place for server.

Coming from me, I did switch my Game Drive, 3TB to 4TB SSD SATA, but that's because I want to.

I will be switching my other 2x3TB HDD to 4TB NVME, another, want.

I have another second PC, it's mostly used by my sibling, almost same configuration: 1TB SSD (OS), and 2x3TB for Games and Workspace. You think it's worth to spend three to five times the money to replace a cheap 3TB HDD?

What if you need more than 8tb of storage? What if you're on a budget, and can't spend $500+ on an 8tb drive? What if you wanted that storage, inside your pc?

Saying "You don't need a HDD in a machine in 2024" is simply not true for a lot of people.

Backup, do a veeam disk image, and a rescue pendrive, so you can get OS back and running in no time, if anything happens.

It's all about how much storage someone uses/needs, and if they can actually use the extra space (that happens to be on an HDD), then would an SSD provide enough benefit worth the cost?

Putting aside the latter question that is really in the eye of the beholder (OP in this case):  I will say that according to current US PCPP prices, SSD prices scale stupidly way higher (1.7 x more $ per GB) for 4TB nvmes than 2TB unless someone is willing to go with a low tier budget nvme that:

  • Is cacheless, which means...
  • It will have much weaker sustained read/write speeds for more than a few seconds.
  • Can have random read/write speeds just as bad or worse than a SATA SSD and a mere step above good HDDs - That matters for OS, bootup, and everyday use for any app that has small file sizes.
  • May be subject to worse endurance: Lower TBW and warranty than other SSDs at the same size

So that makes SSD sizes of 4 TB silly to buy solely on the principle that HDDs "shouldn't" be in a system.

Opinions, gentlemen.  Opinions.  That is mine 🙂

That said, if you need more than 8TB and are on a budget... what are you doing?  Hoarding?  If work, then your 8TB should be making you money.  If games, see Hoarding.  If pics/movies, see Pirating.  If pics/vids, see Hoarding (unless your baby pics, babies are cute).

Either way, I don't believe a HDD in 2024 is a viable piece in a gaming machine.  No games should be run on one.  If you're on a budget, you make that compromise and I won't hold it against you (not that you should care what I think anyway).  If productivity, then hope it's handling your needs well enough.

No worries, but I am not taking my "F*** HDD"s in 2024" bumper sticker off my car though.

I mean, hdds are still faster than most internet connections are these days, and playing games off of one sure beats deleting and reinstalling random games that you rarely play.

No worries, but I am not taking my "F*** HDD"s in 2024" bumper sticker off my car though.

Except, you can get certified SATA Enterprise drive (which also works in consumer desktop, no need molex to SATA) about 8-14TB for US$90 more than new 3-4TB HDD.

You do know that in some other countries, they have slower ethernet connection and worst, capped (once exceed the cap, ISP charged you more), hoarding games is better than downloading 100GB+.

Even if you are working, you are using that 8TB+ storage as local storage project, before sending it to your NAS.

Once again, even if you're gaming, your still limited by your network.

This is like saying everyone shouldn't get AMD's B-series board (which is the most useless chipset from AMD).
