Looking for a reliable sata SSD (500gb)

0013

I have been researching on a new SSD for my computer and now I am stuck. I am looking for a 500gb sata drive that must be reliable since it is the only one I will be using.

Now the hard part, everything seem to have been turning to crap these days. Chinese SSD seems to be a lottery on what comes inside. Was almost ordering a Western Digital blue and found out all SA510 die suddenly. Samsung 870 evo (overkill in my opinion) also seem to have issues now. Crucial BX500 and MX500 going the same way.

What are the SSD that I should look for? Is it really necessary to go for an M2 SSD to get something reliable now?

Thanks for the help

Samsung SSDs are going to be the best in terms of reliability, they're the SSDs I've seen in my shop the least with with the lowest failure rate. Crucial MX500s are also fairly solid. I wouldn't consider anything else personally, if you're looking for reliability. Well unless you want to pay hundreds more for an intel enterprise SSD. Where did you hear Samsung 870s are bad now? I haven't heard or experienced such things.

If you are only going to be running a single SSD in your system regardless of quality and if your data is important you should also set up a backup. External HDD, Cloud, anything. No matter how reliable an SSD, if the data is important a backup is 100% mandatory. SSDs if/when they fail, tend to bite the dust pretty hard and recovery can be a lot tougher than on a mechanical HDD.

Thanks for the advice. The reason for reliability os mainly because I live in 2 countries. In one of them I have a desktop with the backups on a hard drive. However, would be very annoying if the laptop SSD goes bad when I am on my second home for 1 or 2 months.

For the Smasung problems, I came to the following posts and tough to be quite legit:

Why no bring  a backup drive with your or backup to the cloud?

There really isn't great data on how reliable any drive model is as you need a pretty good sample size and controlled conditions. So I'd just buy a decent model from a name brand and back it up.

Samsung has been having poorer reliability for many of the products they've been making the last 2-3 years.............including their SSDs.........go for Crucial's MX500........i've one since 2019 and it still works

The problem is, the one now, is diffrent from the MX500 from 2019.

but yes, from the SATA ones.

MX500

870 evo

KC600

I own both MX500 1TB (OS drive, M.2, this is second PC) and 2 870 Evo 4TB (Game and Scratch disk), so far, I have 0 issues with it.

It doesn't matter which connection is it using, it's all based down to RNG.

Most of the links you've provided seems to be they are using them in homelabs or NAS or cache drive--outside their recommended usage. There is one outlier is Samsung drive had a bad batch, which fails prematurely in 2021 or manufactured within 2021.

Avoid BX500, they are MX500 but without DRAM and likely cheaper controller.

And QLC NAND in 500GB and up

https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/#BX500

like, they were never the same as MX500, they always had worst controller, always were DRAMless, and now they are getting QLC NAND.

Thanks everyone for the help. In that case I think I will end up with the Samsung or the MX500.
