Should my FPS be higher with an RTX 3050ti?

Ehrix
Go to solution Solved by Ehrix,

Alright, it seems I have fixed the problem. I did not have my intel drivers for the graphics installed. Once I installed the intel graphics drivers, I seemed to have gotten a MASSIVE increase in my performance. Thanks everyone for the help.

So I'm currently off for college and I'm using my laptop right now for gaming since I didn't bring my main PC with me. My laptop has i7-12700H, rtx 3050ti 4gb, and 32 gb of ram (that's the main important stuff). My native resolution is 4k but when I play (for example) fortnite, I'm playing at 1440x900. I have fortnite set to performance instead of DirectX12 and I have every setting set to low. Im barely hitting 60 fps. Should I be hitting a higher FPS with my system and there's some problem with my laptop settings or is a 3050ti 4gb just that bad?

Current Pc Parts:

-CPU: Intel i7-9700k

-GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 black edition

-CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken x62

-Mobo: Asus z390-E gaming

-Ram: Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 32g @3000MHz

-Storage: Samsung 850evo 256Gb

-Storage: Toshiba 1Tb 7200rpm

-Case: NZXT H500

-Extra: NZXT Hue 2

If your screen is not able to do 4k 120hz then it will never do over 60 FPS in 4k. Go into your windows settings regardless of your settings for display output dimensions and go to,

system>display>advanced display> and check/change your refresh rate...... If its set to 60hz then you're most likely gonna cap out at 60fps. The way i explain this to people in simple terms is, your refresh rate(in Hz) is equal to your max FPS without tearing or laggy gameplay.

For example I have 3 monitors plugged into my 3090 Founders edition. 2 are BenQ 32" 2560x1440 144 Hz, and my main monitor I game on is, a Dell 32" 2560x1440 165Hz. All monitors are "2k" half the specs of 4k. I can run any game set to 2560x1440 165 Hz and 165 fps custom framerate, on my main monitor, without tearing or laggy gameplay. I can also use Nvidia surround custom resolution  with all 3 monitors set to 7680x1440 @ 144 HZ (2560x3=7680) for a 1 screen setup across all 3 monitors for sim racing. The Height of 1440 never changes though as it's the same all the way across the 3 monitors.

Hope this helps....... I know youre not in 4k settings BTW just read my full response and it'll make sense in the end

My monitor does cap at 60 fps but my fps sometimes drops to like 20-30 fps which makes it stutter. I’m trying to keep it at 60 or above so that it stops stuttering. I think it’s a problem with how my gpu is being dedicated to the game. My refresh rate on my laptop is 60 so if I can get the game to run like at 70 on average I won’t have any visible lag problems if you get what mean.

What laptop? This is a weird cpu gpu config so maybe there is something else going on.

As for the 3050ti mobile 4g yeah it sucks real bad but it shouldnt be this bad.

What are your temps during gaming?

My temps for cpu I think are around 80-90C and the GPU I think 70-80C. I have a dell xps 15.

Quote "I have fortnite set to performance instead of DirectX12"

Confused  That doesn't make a whole lot sense. Either the game uses directx 11, 12, opengl, vulkan or some other API. I think I understand what you were trying to say that you have your game set to performance.

Are you using a fan cooler because you should be with those CPU temps?

I don’t have a fan cooler. The game I’m trying to run (fortnite) has a performance mode. I don’t know what it uses in performance mode. Also it looks like my gpu isn’t being used but it’s hard to tell because I switch from the game to task manager and I don’t see any utilization. Idk if it just disappears though when I switch tabs.

You need to see if, when the game is running, it is using the iGPU off the i7=12700H or actually using the RTX 3050 Ti instead.

Are you running off battery, or plugged into the charger?

Are you able to monitor the CPU's frequency?

Intel only lists the "maximum" or "up to" frequency for the i7-12700H.

It might be hitting 90*C and throttling the CPU frequency down... from 4.7 GHz.... to like 2.7 GHz or something.

It looks like it’s using only the iGPU. I tried changing graphics settings to use the specific dGPU but that doesn’t seem to work and my bios doesn’t have any settings to turn off the iGPU. I also tried disabling the integrated graphics using device manager but since the dGPU isn’t being used, the game doesn’t function probably

Did you go through the nVidia control panel?

You can go through 'Global Setting' and manually override it... or use 'Program Settings' to make it program/game specific.
Default is 'Auto-select'
