I have a GTX 970 that I originally bought with my 4790k. At the time it was a great setup. Im sure you can probably find one on eBay or locally pretty cheap but I would also consider selling mine if that's something you're interested in and if you can't find one.

A GTX970 was a good pairing at the time the 4790 came out

At that time I had a 4770 but previous gen GTX770

If you're going Windows XP, a GTX 960 4GB is godmode. With a 4790K, I doubt you're going XP (and I personally wouldn't with a 4/8), so based on your games...maybe a GTX 970? Or an R9 390/390X if you want to heat your room and cook pizza while playing Doom?

if im going 900 series id rather go 980 or 980ti since the 970 has its vram issue and id like to avoid any issues in games thanks tho

Nvidia 9 series.  But if u want rx 580 I have 4 of them only used for like 15 hours. I would make u a killer deal shipped. Still in there boxes.

High end Maxwell, either 780ti, 980ti, Titan Black or Titan X Maxwell

Or high end R9 series, R9 Fury, Fury X or Nano

Or slightly older, R9 290x, 390x, etc

If i had to pick one for a general purpose era card to pair with a 4790k, Titan Black. Just because it has a cool name.
