Samsung Tablet; Carrier VS Direct

Is there any reason to a kid the carrier tablets? Looking at getting a used Samsung tablet, and got an offer for one from AT&T. I'd prefer one without the carrier stuff on it, but how bad is the bloat? Will it affect updates? Particularly since it won't be used in the US.

No experience with AT&T. BUT, carrier tablets tend to be cellular enabled. In the case of the AT&T tablet its going to be compatible with their network and their bands. You would probably want to make sure its unlocked before purchase because thats a thing. Not sure about updates, I recall that with Android updates can get complicated because both the device manufacture and the cellular provider can tweak them as needed. At least when I was an Android user, its been quite a few years.
