NAS or DAS+smb for Content Creators?

Which one should I go for video editing?

Currently editing on Laptop and storing the raw data on external HDDs and transferring files to clients via GoogleDrive. Current internet speed is 100Mbps.

Option 1:NAS build. Synology Diskstation DS923+ with 4x16TB HDD.

Option 2:DAS build with smb. Orico 3559C3 (5bay enclosure) 5x16TB HDD. Planning to hook it up with a spare laptop via usb and connect to other devices via smb. (Yes, I have seen reviews of it overheating but not sure if it’s a major issue considering the fact that I will be turning it on only when using it and not running it 24x7)

I would say to do Option 1,

because multiple people will be able to edit

right of it at the same time (if you expand).

But you can only attach four drives,

so why don't you concider building your own

NAS.

It doesn't make a huge difference if you're the only editor.

In either case, you want your active projects to be on local storage. If you set up a NAS, you don't want to be editing video off an SMB share over a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Direct-attached storage will be quicker, but still not as fast as an internal SSD.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

You got that right, I’ll be the only editor and currently using two internal nvme. 1tb nvme for os and 4tb nvme for active projects. The HDDs will be for storing data and sharing files to clients just like how google drive works. I’ve tried one 1tb Hdd 5200rpm via smb for playing 4K video and there was abit of buffering issue while fast scrolling. So, not sure if the 7200rpm variant will solve this issue because NAS seems overkill for my kind of work.

Yes, DIY NAS would be my 3rd option. Any recommendations on the build?

How a bout

- Core I3 10th gen non f (so you do not need a GPU)

- 16GB+ Ram

- HDD for Capacity, SSD for Speed (maybe use the SSD's as a Cache)

- Boot Drive all depends on OS (i would recommend Truenas Scale)

- Cooler can be the Intel Box one

- PSU just a Good Brand and fitting Wattage

- LSI (Whattever they're called now) Host Bus Adapter for the Storage Drives

and a Motherboard that is Compatible.

PS. 2,5GB Network might not be a bad idea.
