Water Cooling a Scar 16 4090/13980hx Laptop

Found the other 4000 points for my CPU. Win 11 23H2 doesn't seem to agree with my laptop. Back on Win 10 22H2 right now and trying to find an iso for Win 11 22H2. CPU temp high was 76* at 5.4 P core 4.3 E core.

this is an mod'd AIO with thermal pads, when i use it i take off the underside of my laptop and i let the laptop's GPU heatpips rest on the thermalpads

is that hose over the top of the fans a little reservoir tube? Used to race with a few guys who did similar for their rear brake fluid (motorcycles).

One last update and this is all wrapped up until it is time to do the GPU shunt mod.

Shunt mod done and 2nd place in Time Spy achieved. If I could OC the RAM I could get closer to first, but messing with an SPD reader and custom BIOS isn't something Im down to get into at the moment.

Update on this, downgrading to Win 10 22H2 allows you to upgrade to Win 11 22H2 instead of straight to 23H3.

With the shunt mod done the GPU is pulling about 100w more than previously in certain areas, particularly the Metro Exodus "Two Colonels" DLC which sees as high as ~280w on the GPU alone (that is somewhere between 350-400w total between the GPU,CPU, and other components!!!) with that, temps are also higher. I can get the temps back down by turning the fan RPM up, but that is gross 🤢🤮

SO, instead of turning up the T30s, I am making two changes to the water loop to see where we end up. The first change will be adding a second 240mm EK Cool Stream radiator (Thanks Performance PCs for having ONE left in stock), and the second will be trying the Barrow RAM water block.

I already have the second radiator (need to go to MicroCenter for more coolant) and, sadly, it has made about 0 impact on temps. I am hoping this is because the Alpha Cool block has no micro fins whatsoever, this is where the Barrow block comes in. This RAM block is, as far as I have found, the only RAM cooler that has micro fins. Because of the importance of these with CPU cooling, I am hoping this will get us some improvement with the temperatures. If not...Well... The more you know...

Ive seen it all now a watercooled laptop. Have to give you 10 out of 10 for orginality. First time ive seen this. However saying that i would give you 3 out of 10 when you could of just got a laptop standard fan cooler which goes under the laptop to keep things cool enough. Of course your laptop looks like something out of a terminator film which has its appeal. I guess this is your pet project away from gaming sessions lol.

Totally agree that it is pretty extra, but it is in no way comparable to a cooling pad!

If you are okay with a ~60db cooling pad, that is obviously always an option. The whole reason I started this project was because of how obnoxious fans are on laptops, even more so for the IETS GT pads, which are the only cooling pad that does anything more than lifting the back of the laptop will. The original versions of this were actually just a GT500 with different fans, but none ever had enough static pressure to do anything meaningful. Meanwhile, with this I still have the stock air cooling and can run Metro Exodus and Dead Space both on ultra completely silent and under 70*c CPU/GPU, with the CPU at 5.2 and the GPU shunt modded to pull ~270w, something that will never happen with a cooling pad and fans.

Just realized I haven't put up the more recent pictures of the black water block and hoses. Should have a book mark before I get to cutting anything to see if the ram block with fins works better.

Edit - need to do more testing, took a bit longer but temps were eventually the same. Going to do back to back to keep ambient close.

im actually testing my "Franken-AIO-Coolingpad" this easter,

and the Avg temps while gaming is down almost 16c and max Temps down 9c; on the CPU
and about 16-20c down on the GPU

Laptop is not sounding like a jet 😄  mission complete 👍

Got the AMD SP5 block in from Iceman and this thing is beefy, it covers up everything on the heatsink with the cold plate. My concern right now with it on the spare is the upper left GPU screw holds it up a bit, but when it is installed it should hopefully not be an issue.

redid the testing with the AC block and the barrow block instead of using data from two months ago when ambient was low enough I couldn’t feel my hands and things are looking good for the Barrow block.

Getting metal polish and more LM to do everything fresh and compare all three blocks back to back in a video to see how it all goes.

RIP.

The GPU screws don’t sit flush with the heatsink so I was drilling to make clearance. My bits are just a touch too steep though, so, right when I got it to have enough clearance, it punctured the cold plate. IMG_1685.thumb.jpeg.8710b49114cd8c9608e1f472670ae3db.jpeg

Shunt mod

Hey, buddy. I also wanted to ask for the future about Shunt mod for Asus scar 16 laptop.
Did you remove the old resistor R005 and replace it with R003 here?

I just need to order resistor R003 and swap it in both places?

Yes, you need a 2512-R003 and a 1206-R003 for the rear of the mobo and the front. Highly recommend SnBi solder for the low melting temp to be as safe as possible with the mobo. You also need to clean off any residue from the foam that is on the mobo with in a few inches of the resister on the back or it will melt and be a huge pain to clean after. You might consider a R004 as well for a bit less power draw than the R003 to avoid overheating. I can get away with pulling more because of the water cooling but without adequate cooling you might not be able to. For instance, even with water cooling, I still hit 70* on the GPU sometimes when pulling ~270w on Metro Exodus.

I want to make a water cooler for my laptop, but it won't be as cool as yours. I want to use Cooler Master Nepton 240m for cooling, it has a good expansion of the cooling plate.

If you want to go that route, I do want to stress that the reason I chose the blocks Im using is because the cold plate is totally flat. I would caution with using one where it isn't because of the additional flex on the lower case cover and pressure on the heatsink. That is, assuming you want to integrate it how mine is and not use a cooling pad like NorKris'.

I will have a stand where I will attach the cooling plate and it will be in contact with the cooling system of the laptop. I am now waiting for an additional back cover for the laptop so I can modify it.

I noticed that you are using the original laptop back cover. Would this not be a problem when selling it?
If you replace it with a different one, the purchased back cover will not have the model information, etc. on it.
I found a reasonably priced laptop back cover:

Funny thing, this isn't the original. I got a spare, was too impatient for it to come in, cut the original, and moved the stickers over. Now, my warranty is up and the Iceman block won't fit with the already modded cover, so I cut the spare. I ordered another one to have for big trips or air travel, but don't want to wait for the other to arrive. I don't really plan on selling the laptop any time soon and, Id imagine, anyone willing to buy a shunt modded laptop would probably be equally interested in the water cooling regardless.

Also, If you need any Asus parts, use these guys. They ship parts from Asus and get them out super fast. Ive gotten 2 case covers and 2 heatsinks from them and all arrived fast and in great shape.

Edit - To clarify, the warranty is up because I got the laptop as an open box + Black Friday deal, part of what made it a lot easier to do all the modding to was the crazy price cut I got from NewEgg. Aside from the obvious part that shunt modding your mobo voids the warranty.
