Should I get 32gb of ram?

I want to buy new ram and was wondering if I should get 32gb or stick with 16gb. I plan on starting some recording for youtube and video editing for my friend as well and was wondering if I should get myself 32gb. A 32gb 3600MHz cl18 kit is 100 usd where I live while that same kit just 16gb is 50 usd. I tought about messing about with some vm-s on linux for privateering some games so would that help in that case as well? Any input is appreciated! I should mention that I do not plan on upgrading my cpu platform for atleast a couple of years.

Current specs of pc: Ryzen 5 5600x, rx 6700xt, b550mb with 2 m.2 ssds.

There are benefits to it but you should ask yourself how much you value that extra 50 bucks. Is a full system upgrade in sight for the near future? Then just save your money for when you potentially upgrade your processor. If you're just in need of extra RAM and your workload requires it then get it. 16gb is pretty much on the low side for editing videos.

I plan to keep this cpu and mobo for atleast another 1/2 generations. Either till amd ditches am5 because they said they will keep it for 2 generations or if Intel makes 15th gen worth it then I may upgrade then so I have one more gen of cpu support. That is my base plan but if 16gb is low for editing then I will most likely just get 32gb to be sure I do not bottleneck myself when doing that.

What type of RAM do you have right now? Upgrading to faster speed is likely less worthwhile than getting more.

If you don't have any memory, just get the 32GB kit, especially as you're getting into content creation.

Doesn't make much sense to buy 16GB anymore, except for a budget PC.

If you already have 16GB, very unlikely to be worth buying 16GB of faster memory, unless it is VERY slow.

Since you haven't mentioned the extend of your content creation or what overall usecases you have, it's tough to give good advice. If you mainly play games, you have to see what resolution and refereshrate you play on, and what graphics card you have or what the rest of your PC looks like, to see if and when you should get a new CPU regardless of what AMD or Intel gens currently exists.

If your content creation and video editing is serious stuff, then of course you shouldn't consider 16gb. but then again, you'll need an overall better PC to do serious 4K content creation. If you're just playing around with making videos and don't want to spend a lot on it, then you could just get the 32gb and move on. If you think you will be upgrading your whole PC soon to be able to take the video editing stuff more serious, then just save your cash for when you do that.

So for me the only reason I went with 32GB is that I am a sucker at closing tabs, and blot like RGB etc

When play games, I noticed my RAM usage is getting close to 80%... so I went with 32GB

Funnily enough that's how I ended up with 64GB LOL.

Based on your build, i assume you have decently fast RAM.  So grab another 16GB kit of the same and enjoy.

Don't overthink.  Marginally faster RAM won't impact your workload much at all.

There's a very good chance fast RAM wont work with four sticks though.

I mean if they plan to use VMs I'd be tempted to go to 64GB if they can afford it, its better to have too much than just enough.  Spare RAM gets used as cache which can greatly speed up games where you fast travel between the same locations often.
