Is there not a "What did you do to (or install on) your computer today" thread?

We don't generally pin topics like that, but feel free to start a topic for it and kick off the discussion. I'm not aware of an existing topic about that, at least not one that gained significant traction.

I was wondering if there's a "What did you do to your computer today" or "What did you install on your computer today" thread, preferrably pinned. I couldn't find such a thread.

Maybe I'm the odd one, but after I build a computer I'm always finding upgrades here and there, be it in hardware or software. A hardware only thread would be ok too.

I'll put it in the General category if that's ok.

Yeah I think that sounds right

What is a software upgrade?

Yes, anything that you added softwarewise to make it better. A change from Windows Home to Windows Pro would be another example. I suppose any update or installation of a driver for your any of your hardware could be conisdered a software upgrade.

I can see your point.

I did differentiate between updates and installing a driver, but then again I did say any update. I guess that depends on what you define as an upgrade. And I regress, as I do feel that not all updates are upgrades. (There are reasons I've been playing more on my Windows XP laptop than on any of my Windows 11 computers this past week).

But in the end, if a person feels it's an upgrade, I say that person has the right to call it that.

What is it quite literally is an upgrade, say the first bios has a security risk (couldn’t think of a better example) and the new one fixes the problem, would you classify that as an upgrade? Sorry if this sounded rude in any way just curious to see what you think.

What if the new Bios version is your favorite number? Wouldn't that be an upgrade? (If it's an upgrade to you, it's fine with me.)

I upgraded from quad SLI to onboard graphics. To me, that was an upgrade.

no because that's literally what an "update" does.

that's like saying overclocking is an "upgrade" because hey its faster now!

you're free to do this yes, but its not correct use of language and gives the impression of a pretty skewed world view - or outright trolling  - i just wouldn't trust someone who talks [nonsense] like that, sorry (not sorry) 😅

ps: depends on context,  of course but just saying "hey I upgraded" just because of a lousy software update makes no sense,  you don't even *know* if it was an actual "upgrade"... lots of software keeps getting worse with "updates" in fact (ahem, windows)
