Should I turn off my mac?

O_Bsnacks

Hello,

So I wanted to know if I should shut my mac down every couple of days at night when I am not using it? I read from multiple sources that you shouldn't, but wouldn't that cause the battery to deteriorate faster? On my last mac I never really shut it off and I think this is one of the reasons that contributed to its short life.

The power on time for my High Sierra Mac mini is something like 200 days, and only due to an extended power failure. It went for about a year and a half since the last restart before that -  when I replaced the SSD.

The only time I ever restart my Mac desktops is for updates, the only time they power off is for upgrades or moving them.

For a portable I’d set a charge limit to protect the battery, but otherwise they don’t turn off either.

It's when the battery is kept at 100% charge for a prolonged time that shortens its life and in some cases causes the cells to swell. A year or so into the pandemic, our workplace saw a large number of laptop batteries swell up because of this given most people left their laptops plugged in 24/7 and our BIOS was misconfigured to favour battery duration, not health.
