PCI(e) card providing POWER?

da na

Working on a project to convert a massive mid 2000s PowerEdge server into a custom case desktop, and the SATA power is an issue I am running into. Molex power comes from the SAS backplane board but this is not something I want in the new case since the SAS card and backplane take a ludicrous amount of space and I do not need them. However, the backplane does all the conversion from PSU connector to 12v/5v for drives, so there is nowhere else I can get SATA, Molex, or floppy power other than this board.

Because of this, is there some sort of card that can pull Molex or SATA power from the PCI-X or PCI-E slots? This seems like the best solution to get SATA drives and Molex fans running on the computer.

Thanks!

absolutely not.

There's no way to use a PCIE Card to get molex / SATA power out of it.  Even if you could, those slots are very low draw limit.    You need the custom hardware shit in that box to make it work.

Thanks, guess I'll be hooking up an external PSU to run fans.

there are pcie sata slot ssd/m.2 but for gpu power you probly would have to only use what the slot can give normaly 75w and under...

uness you can add another psu in the case? or a power brick or somthing... still would not be recomed for gpu power.

I have dyslexia plz be kind to me. dont like my post dont read it or respond thx

also i edit post alot because you no why...

Not doing GPU power here, only want to power one SATA drive and a few fans. Will probably use an external 12volt brick and pull 5v power from USB ports.

ya there are pcie ssd and m.2 that dont need external sata power.

fans can run off usb i would think depends on fan and how many.

This is a 20-year-old server mind you. Long before boot from PCIe SSDs existed

the m.2 runs off sata so it basically an expensive ssd but m.2 ruing at sata speeds... 🤷‍♂️ thow there might be some cash benefit thow...

it cannot boot from PCIe cards, and I believe the adapters you linked will boot from PCIe? Or am I misunderstanding, and somehow they get power from PCIe and use regular SATA for data? I'd prefer to use my current HDD for this system but if need be, your solution seems like it might be good.

there are nvm m.2 and then there the older m.2 with that adaptor to sata (data) plugs in to a sata port on the mb.

there probably an ssd pcie with sata data ill look for that too.

What poweredge?

Some dremels and boom instant standard pc psu fits.

Been there done that with a poweredge 2900. Even modded the fans to be 4pin controllable on a server fan board to then slow them down to 800rpm.

Ended up making my own backplane by using the old one as standoff holders for the sas connections.

Was only worth it because I had a lot of crap for free tho

Poweredge 2900 Mk3. Would love to know how to connect a standard PSU since it uses a 24-pin connector, but then not a standard 4-pin for CPU power. Also would like to know how to control fans.
