Optical audio to Stereo (red and white)

Go to solution Solved by peachtopus,

If you can figure out how HDMI would be best because you can adjust the volume from the TV.

If you can't figure out the HDMI go on eBay and look up "optical DAC" unfortunately you won't be able to adjust the volume from the TV since it's digital. But you'll have to adjust the volume from the sound system.

I have been blessed with a crappy 28 inch CRT "HD" (eyeroll) TV whose speakers are almost as bad as the image quality. I have a decent sound system, although it's only stereo. Since I'm using the HDMI port on my Wii U, I need to somehow get the sound from the TV to my sound system, and it appears that the only way that sound gets out of the TV aside from the attached speakers is the digital audio (optical) port. The sound system only takes stereo (red and white RCA type thing). What sort of converter do I need? What would a decent brand? I want something that isn't super cheap, but I'm not really willing to spend more than $25. Maybe $30. Is optical to stereo the best way, or should I take the sound from the HDMI cord? Thanks for your time.
