Xeon or i5

Go to solution Solved by kishagi,

I say go for the Xeon. it sounds much cooler than i5, dont you think?

Hello,

I can either go for an i5 4440 or a Xeon E3-1220 V3. The system will be used for gaming (Watch Dogs mainly) but primarily will be a general use PC. I know that both of them are overkill, but I want the system to last as long as possible without an upgrade.

The Xeon seems too good to be true - an i7 without iGPU for the price of an i5. (The Xeon only costs £15 more than the i5)

Are there any disadvantages in using the Xeon? Does it have lower single threaded performance?

Thanks.

Lol because falling back to integrated graphics, you'd never tell the difference :P

It's not for gaming or anything fancy, just an option to make your PC somewhat useful with zero effort in case of main GPU failure.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

I know, but in that eventuality I, personally, wouldn't have an issue going out and getting the cheapest piece of crap dedicated (for like £20) to just make do until I was in a position to replace properly.

I already don't have an igpu so let's hope this stays hypothetical though.

Nope. The Xeon is an i7 that had been downclocked 100 mhz and without an i gpu, Pretty much a 4770. Get the Xeon.

What @Manny Calavera said.

The e3-1220 v3 doesn't have HT. It does have slightly higher turbo boost than the 4440 and a few different features but that's about it.

Get whichever is cheaper. They're very similar.

Xeon has more cache, no? Do you do any rendering, CAD or AV work? If not, get the i5.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

has mentionned by ONE very aware user, the xeon has more cache so it would do a better job in video editing/encoding for example, the 1230v3 would be a good pick for its hyperthreading...the 1220 doesnt come with ht...
