How does your PC compare to one you built/got for your significant other/Famaly member? And does it bother you?

K9ninjah

Ive been working with computers for going on almost 3 decades(27 years) now....

and ive always been upgrading builds and improving on them as well as constantly adding to my own.

at some point i went all out and got myself a lot of upgrades almost ending up with a entirely new pc and as my wife and I shared my pc.

i got her a quite decent pc so that she has one for herself. (May 2021)

now at this time my wife wanted more performance and i kept adding on and on and on...

Currently my wife's pc is now more powerful than mine but on the other side, my PC is more decked out.

ive came across a few people that build and recommend computers to be specced just below theirs, just so that they can say "O but mine is still better"

then ive met others that end up needing to sell their organs to get others better than what they have.

My PC

It was kinda weird when my friend was just given a PC that was well above mine.

But another story, I gave an old rig to another friend to replace her Ivy Bridge shittop. She does professional photography in Adobe and occasionally plays Universe Sandbox.

I gave her an FX-8350, 16GB RAM, Radeon R7-360 2GB, and threw in a 500GB SSD along side the old 1TB HDD. I setup Windows to automatically run backups to the 1TB HDD so she'd never have to think about it. She went from mobile 2c4t to 8 FX desktop cores, got a double to boot storage and a backup drive, a decent Radeon graphics card, and a fresh Windows 10 because her old laptop was completely shit software wise. It was a night and day difference.

Quote my reply or I won't see your reply. It's the single overturning left arrow under every message.

Someone has almost no budget and goes the ultimate scrapper route? Sure lets go but we still try to make good decisions

Then at the end of that I just go home, do what I do click the startup button and maybe go like damn thats a cool lookin pc maybe I'd like to try that some day for both of those options and unless I was like really impressed or some thing was memorable I'd forget aboyt it in the next half our  😛

I think you're a rare breed, as kids are incredibly insecure and jealous.    You may also be older, not sure.

My family gets my hand-me-downs.  If my parents need a new GPU, I sell them mine at a reasonable price, then use the money to buy myself a newer model.  If the kid's computer needs a new monitor, mine goes to them, and I get the new one.

No sense in wasting good hardware on someone who can't appreciate (or use) the power.  It also gives me an excuse (and some cash) to buy myself new hardware.

26 is not that old 😛

I mean as a 14/15 year old I was stuck on a p4 3.06ghz, radeon x850 and was fixing first gen core I system that were so much faster.

Only thought then was like damn these people can play the new games. Wish I could do that.

And then I went back to playing minecraft and unreal like nothing happened 😛 or went on my modded ds and just played one of the thousands of games I could on there

Eventually I did get a better pc but like guess what games I still play a lot these days 😛

I've only built my own computers.  My wife uses a laptop when she needs one.  I have walked others through building their own but I've never cared about who "had the best".  I'm too old for that shit.

Right now, only difference is she’s got a 13700k vs my 13900k. That’s permanent. Temporarily she’s got a 3070ti to my 4090.

The other difference is that I’m running a hardline loop, she’s not but she doesn’t like the look.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Yep. Wife was happily rocking a GTX 970 (1080p monitor). I had a 2070 Super.

We wanted to hand down the 970 system to her nephew, so I decided to get a 4070 and give the wife my old 2070S. She was like "Hey! Why don't I get the new GPU".

I said "because you don't even notice visuals or framerates". (I'm also the one who games on a 65" screen and plays VR).

When all is said and done, she boots up the 2070S system to play some Warzone, and I ask how the new card is. She says "I don't see a difference".

I said: "Exactly."

I dont care at all,  my friend got a really expensive pc, and i had a macbook air. He games but i dont and my macbook suits me just fine. Sure, i might be able to get a better pc if i had a job but im in middle school and i can't get one. Fusion360 runs fine on my macbook and thats all i use.

I also had an EXTREMELY cheap 20 dollar used chromebook when i was younger and i handed it down to my sister. She doesnt do anything on it and she does not care.

My moniter is also nothing special, just a hand me down from my dad.

Did I help you?? Then please mark my answer as the solution!

Since I upgrade once every 3-5 years, my friends make builds better then mine, but it really doesn't bother me since I know what my needs are and if my current pc is sufficent to do the job then there is no need to really upgrade.

This cycle though I will be holding off until I see what Nvidias new gpu's are going to be which is apparently happening in 2025, so it is along way off.

My PC is the best PC in the house, except the motherboard. It's not even that great, either.

Ryzen 3600

64gb DDR4-3200

MSI B350M Bazooka

MSI RTX 2080 Seahawk

1tb ADATA Legend 800 NVME

1tb PNY SSD

2x3tb HDD(6tb Windows storage space, recorded game videos storage)

3tb HDD  Game storage drive

2x 32" LG 1080p 75hz FreeSync and 24" Acer 1080p 75hz

My GF's PC

8700k

16gb DDR4-3200

Asus ROG STRIX Z370

MSI GTX 1080Ti Windforce

Samsung 256gb NVME

2tb HDD storage drive

AOC 26" 1080p

It wouldn't bother me if her PC was better than mind, and I'd happily build her a better one if she wanted it. The one she has now though goes to waste, because she all she plays is Sims 4.

GPU aside (I’ve a used RTX 3060), I consider my sister’s PC that we built to be better than mine in every other way.

That Ryzen 5 5600G is kind of a beast, along with 16 GB of fast (I forget the exact speed, but around 3700 MTs) memory, a Seasonic PSU, and decent-ish mobo. Also took the time to make sure cable management is top notch. I was quite happy with how this build turned out, and throwing in a new GPU is stupid easy too. The case is cheap, but offers the necessities, and cable management options.

My own PC, there’s definitely some jank, and it’s running an 8-9 year old platform, and honestly not enough RAM. I did change out the PSU (some Thermaltake I got on sale from Fry’s, to the EVGA one), and threw in a cheap i7-4790 (from the i5-4590). The drive situation is a literal hodgepodge of stuff I happen to have around, including an NVME SSD, a couple old cheap SATA SSDs, and a couple HDDs, one of which actually came from my old laptop from 2009 (not used for anything important, just a cache drive for large Blender files, and never bothered to remove), which is somehow still running.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…
