Hello, I am going to pick up a used ROG Strix 6700 XT in a week or so, what should I look for except for obvious damage on the card. The card was priced at $450 AUD but I negotitaited it down to $400. He seems like a nice guy from what I have spoken with him online, he said he bought the card for $1399 during the pandemic.

Thanks in advance.

See if you can get the guy to run the GPU when you are picking it up. Just let him load up something like furmark or 3Dmark, atleast thats what I would do.

The big thing to look at would be seeing it run a benchmark in person to make sure the card isn't faulty. If there isn't any silicon issues (the ones that actually matter), it should run any software you run on it. I like Time Spy and Superposition for this, but it's personal preference what you run.

If you can't see it running in person, all you can do is look for obvious damage. Checking to make sure the fans don't have any wobble or something like that is a decent idea, but it's really all you can do.

Furmark is free, 3DMark has a paid equivalent but has a demo version with Time Spy and Fire Strike, Superposition is free but for all features (custom runs, run indefinitely, etc.) you need to have the paid version. Kombustor last I checked was just an MSI skin for Furmark, it would work too.

Main reason I like and primarily use Time Spy for this though is that you can compare the score the card outputs to other with 3DMark's built in databases, similar systems to make sure the card is performing correctly (some types of instability, mainly memory, can manifest themselves as performance regressions rather than outright crashes a lot of the time). Any of the tests work and you can find stock scores for them, 3DMark's is just the most convenient.

I do buy my used stuff based on trust and common sense.

Most of us are decent. Most of us are selling stuff not because it's faulty but because we are upgrading.

What you ask isn't realistic to me.

Probably it would be difficult to produce a demonstration at pickup.

Also it would take time. Most people are short on time.

I'd just ask for some pictures and screenshots, benchmarks and decent answers.

And there are ways (here) to check the sent product before the money gets wired.

Edit : sorry, I overreacted. A demonstration is fine 🙂

490$ and you have a new one

yeah, thing is. This is a "better" model, three fan instead of two and I honestly think it looks a lot nicer too.

Yeah, I am doing cash at pickup. I don't want to be going into a random strangers house now thinking about it. I think he is a pretty decent dude, he said he is selling because he upgraded to a 6800 XT. He said he will send pics later this week.

Yeah, thought about that too. But rather the other way around. I'm a guy. You're probably a girl.

What a world the world must be for a girl. A life should include playing both genders.

No offense to him, but, I don't think it makes any difference when he bought it during the pandemic period.   I would look at other used 6700 xt cards and see what he priced his at compared to those.

If possible, try to see it in his system - running.   If that is not possible, try to ask a lot of questions - perhaps, request some benchmarks/tests - for temps/scores etc.

That's all I can think of.

Edit:  I read the other replies.   Pretty good advice there.

Why not?   If you're afraid of doing that - I wouldn't buy the card.  Try to bring a friend if it's that bad.

Yeah, his card is priced fairly at $400. I will ask for temps and images of the card running in a system because he said he can and will provide that.

Yeah just bc you don't know what they would do. Like, I could bring my dad but I don't think he's to keen on it too.

Ok.  You have to do whatever you are comfortable with.  I would - go see if I had the option - although it is someone else's PC - it is another 'real use' situation you can check out.   The next best thing is screen shots and screen shots of the card being tested in gpu monitor/testing software - like....???

https://www.softwaretestinghelp.com/gpu-benchmark-software/

Perhaps, someone more knowledgeable can chime in as I'm not really familiar with them.   Also, screen shots of using the monitor software, for e.g. MSI Afterburner or GPU Tweak (does that work with AMD, too?) - while playing a game could be useful?
