Discussion about LTTs increasing channel variety

Mr Winter

Hi, about that Linustake in last WAN show at 2:18:24, LTTs new focus-channels would increase competition and not eat into other smaller creators pie.

I disagree, at least partially. Having a large creator cover the same thing as a small creator has a major potential of eating up major parts of their pie.

Similar to when Apple introduces better, more fluent and sometimes better first-party implementations making other apps almost redundant.

Examples are most WeatherApps, AltStore and many more where Apple sometimes blatantly ripped off third party apps.
Sure, it’s forcing competition and AltStore as well as Weather Apps still offer more features. Which are definitely not needed for most people.

Steve is certainly already trying to justify his PSU tester in front of the 'friendly' competition from the LAB.

Or his screwdrivers facing the the upcoming undeniably better LTT Screwdrivers.

Again it’s just for the 'friendly' competition, but with LTTs marketpower, size and budget they have the potential to similarly to Apple copy (and potentially improve) a third party product and eat up major parts of their competitions pie. The competition is simply unable to match the potential products of LTT.

If Linus want to still say, that it’s only friendly competition, they will have to put a unique spin on these new channels. Similar to how they did with MacAdress.

They can’t just unreachably outmatch or copy their competition in every way and still call it such.
Especially with the LAB in the making.

Okay... Except you aren't limited to one source for information.

Just watch a big channel cover Diablo 4, then watch other, smaller, more relatable creators (or, if you're really insane, TheYamiks), and you'll get a better POV on what's going on.

If smaller creators and their viewers think like that, sure. But LMG can't cover everything, even if they do more detailed focus content. They cover just about upper mainstream of US/Canada markets and occasionally goofy "Weird China stuff". They haven't covered Korean monitors ever. Not even they were better and cheaper than local market variants. Would dedicated Audio & Video gear channel do that? Probably still not.

LTT is casting a wide net in terms of content. However if the car channel is anything to go by it is not quite in-depth as say Hagerty or Regular Car Reviews that does history, development and technical comparisons.

LTT seems to be aiming to become the Canadian Tire of channels. All kinds of content but if you really want some in-depth niche autismo level of analysis, that's where smaller channels thrive since they can dive into topics that most general audience won't care about. And since they have SIGNIFICANTLY lower overhead with a smaller crew, they go in green easier and don't have to operate on the GRIND GRIND GRIND release treadmill.

Professional underdog supporter.

There is one huge difference. You watch YT channels for the people behind them, and that is especially true for gaming channels. Also, in gaming, they will be a new player, it's not another spinoff tech channel with slightly different focus.

I think this situation is similar to outfitting your entire tool kit/workshop. Let's say you're a Milwaukee fan. You can buy all of their and be pretty much set. But what if you want something that's better?

Sander? Get Festool. Mitre saw? Get Dewalt. Reciprocating Saw? Get Bosch.

All of those tools are available under Milwaukee, and they're "good enough" since you're already invested in the family of tools. But if you really care, then you're going to be looking at other brands for specific needs.

LMG is essentially going to be the same thing. Competition is good. If other YouTubers lay down and die because LMG happens to overlap with them... I don't think they had the grit to be successful YouTubers in the first place.

Another though: "they're just movies" podcast shut down recently. It's a different situation, but it's kind of simmilar. It proves that having a large team behind channel does help, but doesn't guarantee anything.

I think that's like... really different?

"They're Just Movies" was more of a passion project that happened to be under the LMG umbrella, and it wasn't even Linus' decision to shut it down. It inherently required a time commitment outside of working hours.

1.5hrs "podcasts" for 10K-20K views with Senior level writers? That's a massive "waste" of time.

For these upcoming focused channels, there will actually be a writing team behind it and of course it'd presumably be done during working hours so it's much more practical to maintain.
