They don't own it, so they can't sell it off.

 

We are talking about the domain management. Google doesn't "own" the domains, they were only acting as a registrar, and registrar's can move, merge and be acquired.

 

That said, boy would it ever suck to have a four or five letter dotcom domain only for it to suddenly blink out of existence because google decided it couldn't spare the few pennies to keep the DNS server running.
