Questions about using an OLED TV as a monitor

TV: LG C3 42"

 

1) Taking YouTube as an example, why does watching HDR content looks way much better on the TV application than on the PC (windows 10, enabled HDR)

 

2) Do I have to do anything special to display perfect HDR in Windows 10?

 

3) When using Game Optimizer, why is my "Game Genre" greyed out? (I've disabled AI Genre option, so that is not it)

In terms of Q1 (and Q2, I guess), have you tried this?  - Calibrate your HDR display using the Windows HDR Calibration app - Microsoft Support

My HDR experience on all three Samsung monitors have become much better after using the above app. Maybe it will improve your OLED experience too. 

Also, when connecting your TV to your PC, it might engage the PC mode / Game mode, which may disable all sort of dynamic contrast and dynamic color settings, which may be why you think the image is worse? And make sure to use 0-255 dynamic range in GPU control panel and that deep black are enabled in the TV, otherwise you will have elavated blacks, making black colors grey.

Try using Plex for HDPC, it give great image output with easier to navigate interface that is same as TV and auto HDR / SDR switching.

#1 Its the implementation. When using the app im assuming its better detection and such for it. Never used it though.

 

#2 you need to use Windows 11 to use HDR properly, Windows 10 sucks at it and there really isnt a good fix for it that isnt a royal pain in the ass.

 

#3 no Clue, sounds like a windows or OSD issue, is the firmware updated to the latest?

Note: When I disable HDR in Windows 11, it looks 90% similar to LG App, it's as if in order to fix HDR I have to disable HDR...

Wauw okay, that HDR looks directly broken. Have you tried either Edge or Chrome?

Interesting, Edge looks perfectly fine (I don't have Chrome)

 

Will do some research about Firefox HDR

 

Edit: So apparently Firefox doesn't support HDR on Windows

This is terrible and shouldn't happen. 

 

Maybe Firebox not support HDR acceleration. 

 

Try using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. I use this both browser and so far very OK.

Firefox is never a good browser for sometimes, slow compare with others. Suggest you switch browser.

Firefox is great most of the time - its just bad for video.

I use Chrome for YouTube and social media in general (where I know privacy is not going to be great), Firefox for pretty much everything else.

As convenient as it may be, using a single application for everything has never been good advice, pick the right tool for the job.

Firefox always not good on acceleration and it is slow. Never good to me.

 

Browsing internet is not required separate tools, one for all is far than enough, simplicity and trouble free.

 

Using different tools for a single purpose is normally welcoming the trouble, just test out few and choose the best, it is unnecessary to use few tools for same purpose unless none of it manages to do it all. Anyway, each person got its own preferable method.

Seems like HDR issue is resolved from other posts.

As for 3) I'm not sure but couple of things to keep in mind: The C3 is still quite new so expect couple of bugs here and there, so maybe wait for updates for a fix.

Also, it could be me but for TV you need to adjust a lot of settings to get it right for specific needs. Out of curiosity did you have 4:4:4 passthrough enabled?

Yup I have it! The very first thing that I did was to watch a bunch of "tips & tricks" videos

 

Also got the Game Genre thing working, did not realize that the Sound preset had to be set to Game Optimizer (I had only set it for Picture)

Thanks for the tag, but I will be of no use in the HDR department because I refuse to use it until it literally "just works" as advertised.

To this day, I have yet to encounter an HDR experience (TV or monitor) that "just works" properly without fiddling with the settings.

Like i said in the past, Edge is basically the only browser with decent HDR support. Using Firefox was your main issue.
